From L. Z. Barry. Camp Merrltt, N. J.. June 13. 191S. Editor Times, Dear Sir: Here is a little poem I made up the other day. A coupla beys from Hammond and myself would like for it to be printed in The Times. We ere volunteers and like the army fine. Tell ail the boys to come and give a hand in it. Tell them the sooner they come with us the sooner we'll lick the Germans. I've only been In the army about five weeks ar.d hae. been made a corporal already. T guess thrut's doing your duty. We ere on shipment for somewhere "ever there." I can't hardly wait until I get into this fray, I'll ne-.er feel a3 if I did my duty until I get a Herman. If he gets me he's got to have hatter eyesight than I've got. and I've j-ot good eyes. So trusting you'll do aa we ask, I remain as ever, A Volunteer. CORPORAL LOUIS J. BARRY, Camp Merriit. N. J. 1023 Calumet Ave., Hammond, Ind.

From Joe Hirsch. Sunday, May C5. Dear AH: Several mil's away from our first stop and now encamped in billets to await moving orders. Traveling over here as w-e do now is something I never imagined, though I often saw pictures of American troops traveling in Franc. The railroads here have, improved considerably since .America entered the war powerful locomotives and fine RuUm-ans. But don't Imagine we gt these to travel in. Otir coachea consist of plain box cars wooden benches so that if ycu desire to r- st your vary hones, reclining on ono of thee ' soft Vnehas" is well nigh impossible, sin.'-t.hirty-two Homnies '.men in I-lnglish must be crowded into these cars. Weil, such is army life, and one doesn't know what he can go through until h gets into the same. Our food while traveling consisted cf cornbeef and bread. But mv! how- we did eat when we cooked our f.rst meal at our second camping plae-.. Hardtack and black coffee has no drawback for a hungry soidi'r; in fact, one culd well night eat most anything. Rut there is always some means of bringing on bark to civilization again, so a cold shower with plenty of soap snd a soft bed and warm blankets and the cool refreshing air of the evening r. akes us feel like new born men. In fart, as far as health and spirits, I am feeling fine, with all the hardships. You feel a bigger man once having gone thxough them. so far we have many Herman prisontT. tvery hamiet. town and city has moie or less of them. In this place t w!tt,essed the largest number at one t.nl, marching from their quarters to work. Thev el! seem contented and well f e 1 Their nor; consists of unloading freight cars and rebuilding roas. I trust this t'fds everybody ha the best of health, snd don't forget It Li leaving me 'v: the same conditiota healthy ami in fighting mm. With lots of love and kisses. JOE. Address: Corporal Joseph L. Hineh. Motor Truck Co. No. 423, A. E. F. Via N. Y.
