The Housing Committee, appointed by the Chamber of Commerce, asks the support of the people of Hammond in complying with the Government's request to establish, in connection with the Hammond Chamber of Commerce, a bureau known as the United States Homes Registration Service. The Government desires to have a complete list of all rooms that are open for renting for one or more persons, or for light housekeeping, in the City of Hammond; also all unoccupied dwelling houses, or buildings that may be remodeled and converted into dwelling houses. The new workingmen's homes which will be built with the assistance of the Government in this City cannot be utilized for some time, and even when built, will not be sufficient in number to meet the needs of the great number of employes that are daily coming to our City to assist in the manufacture of munitions for carrying on the war. Therefore, the Government requests the co-operation cf every patriotic citizen in the furnishing of rooms, either for individuals, or for light housekeeping, to assist in caring for such employes. Therefore, the Committee urge that every person in the City of Hammond who can possibly rent a room to one or more employes, that they do so, even though it be some inconvenience to themselves, for in this way they will be helping to win the war. The information desired by the Government should be given on the card forms hereafter shown on this page. If you have either a room, or a building that can be utilized, cut out the card, fill the same out neatly, answering all questions as indicated, and mail it immediately to tthe United States Home Registration Service, in care of the Chamber of Commerce, Hammond, Indiana. Those having rooms suitable for renting, or lighthousekeeping will use form No. 1. This information is requested directly by the Government, and should be given at once. When this information is obtained, an alphabetic list of all rooms, and dwelling places in the City, will be kept on file with the United States Homes Registration Service at the Hammond Chamber of Commerce rooms so that any emloye can be directed to suitable rooms.
