A FINE SHOWING.
Labor, if it steadily follows the course that has hern laid down for it by labor leaders will gain everlasting credit from this war. The first part of May when in former years, industrial unrest reigned, finds the nation's war work going forward without hindrance by a single industrial strike of consequence. The only threatened demonstration that on the Pacific coast as a protest of labor against the conviction of Thomas J. Mooney apparently will not materialize as the result of appeals to the workers by union officiajs and Mooney himself. Intensive efforts of the government aided by the powerful lever of public opinion together to such a degree that there is not a serious tieup anywhere in the country, officials of the Department of Labor said last night. "The marked diminution of strikes and industrial unrest assures the government of the maximum assist of labor in the great war effort," declared Louis Post, assistant, secretary of labor. "The industrial situation has improved considerably in the past year and there is every indication of a continuation of favorable conditions." Satisfaction with the efforts of the government to settle industrial disputes was expressed by Frank Morrison, secretary of the American Federation of Labor. ' During the present year," he said, "there have been 60 per cent less strikes than at corresponding periods last year. Rig strikes have been eliminated. Rome unrest sttfl is found, but chiefly among unorganized workers."

T1S A SAD TALE, MATES It is doubtful if worse tales of woe ever were poured into the ears of the members of the state tax board than those that are now coming from interurbens and street railroad companies over the state. Not all of them are telling these hair-raising tales of poverfty, but most of them have the same story to tell. Each one is worse than the others, if that Is possible. They are pleading with the tax board to be lenient with them and make their appraisements for taxation low as possible, in order to help them to evade the receivership courts. Wages, materials, increase in automobiles, bring out these losses sustained. All of the lnterurbans insist that there is hut one remedy for their present plight, and that is higher fares. They have petitions on file before the commission for higher ra'es. So have some of the street car companies where six tickets are sold for a quarter. They want a straight five cent fare. This concession already has been made to the street car company at Evansviile, but whether it will be made to the 6treet car companies remains to be seen. I'nless they can get more money, the roads say, there is nothing ahead of them hut receiverships. For the last several years the ircerurbans have beer on the down grade, so far as making money has been concerned, arid they have frequently asked the state tax board for relief from hich taxation. There is no question but that there is some merit in their cfaims of poverty, and it is true, too, that in many instances the present owners are "holding the bag'' for some of the Investors and speculators who built itri.interurbans and street railroad" some years aso and then got out from under, leaving the properties heavily overcapitalized and full of water. 1' is only another evidence of the wisdom of the legislature in creatine the public service commission and investing it with power to decide questions of the issuance of securities by utilities in the state. Such a condition as now exists would have been impossible if the state had had the present public service commission law in effect years ago. It is said to be impossible for the interurbans to obtain money with which to make improvements or
here, but lie tells us that the barberry is a Hun and asks us all to kiill it. The tall barberry is an enemy of the United Sta'es, because it is an enemy of wheat. Wheat rust is spread with the pollen from the barberry flower. Dig out the barberry by the roots before it has time to bloom. This is one way to fight the Hun.

WHY SELL HUN PAPERS? Throufh the efforts of the American Defense Society and Mrs. Oliver Cromwell Field German language newspapers will no longer oe handled by the large group of dealers in the vicinity of Long Island Railroad Station. Atlantic and Flathush avenues, llrooklyn. The dealers posted signs yesterday informing customers of their action. Many were congratulated for the stand they took. Hun .language newspapers are still to be found for sale on newsstands and in news stores in Lake county. In Gary and Hammond German newspapers are prominently displayed on newsstands, some of which bear the American fine. How long do you suppose an Knglish language newspaper would last in Germany? FARMERS CAN WHIP GERMANS. Much has been said and written about German efficiency. Lots of this has been plain bunk. If the Germans were as efficient as they have been said to be, they would have had us all whipped long ago.
