SOME SHOP TALK. The papsdnsr of the Chicago Herald into that bourne from which no newspaper ever returns is a matter of some interest to the fourth estpte and to iho puidic at large, which will note with regret the disappearance of so cleanly an edited paper as the Herald from its breakfast tables. Chicago has lost three fine morning papers in the past few years and that they were all ably edited and conservative in tone as well as morninc papers i? significant. The Chronicle, Inter-Ocean an Herald wre institutions. None of them was able to thrive in spite of the care and vigilance of their owners to keep them off the financial rocks. They were not sensational newspapers and it is hard to tell just why they fell hy the wayside, except that the? could not trim their sails to th" storms that sweep over the newspaper world. The Herald made some mistakes in policy, but they were mistakes of the head rather than of the heart. Publisher Keeley since the war broke out has been in Europe quite a good deal and finds himself now an example of the impossibility of petting out a newspaper by long range. It can't be done. Those who pub'.ish newspapers must make bedmates of them. The failure of the Herald Is only, however, another evidence of the fact that the evening newspaper has come to he pre-eminent over th morning nwspapr. The evening newspaper grows apace ill power and prestige and strength. It is no longer ihe weak sister. It has been visibly strengthened hy the war, because the evening newspaper has had all the big news of the war. People no longer expect big war news in the morning newspaper, because it doesn't get it. The evening newspaper get the news first. A startling example of this fact was given by the morning papers the other day to the effect that Ypres had fallen. People were in the doldrums all day, but when the evening papers came out they were amazed to see that Ypres bad not fallen and that there had been no P.rifish retirement. Such instances as this have often happened during the war and the morning paper has suffered thereior. Th Hrald collapse proves also the uncertainty of

West. Hammond, if certain powers of darkness are given leeway, will sink lower than if has ever sunk and such a monstrous unholy condition must not bo permitted to obtain. Mayor Kamradt foueht the granting of more licenses and assured the women who have taken up the fight in a way that ought to make some of the West Hammond mpn ashamed of their. -elves, that he would stand by them through thick and thin.
