OH YES, IF The German ("apt. Kulilivetter who. writing in the Lokal-Anzeiger, says "more American transports would be sunk by U-boats if the matter were not so hazardous"' fittingly characterizes the submarine warfare as at present conducted. Almost all assassins by land or sea operate successfully only when they believe they ate perfectly safe. Of none is flits more true than it is or' ill.- l'in-sian junker who so religiously worships and idealizes his own
hide that he'll take a few chance? injury or rain might follow.

THE FUTURE. Some people are exceedingly gloomy these days as they anxiously peruse the dispatches from Flanders anJ from Picardy. forgettinp that war has scarcely touched this country yet. The day is eominK when thousands of homes will be brought close to the tragedy of war before lone. If God has doomed this nation to desf ruction if her mission is fulfilled and her glory is to pass away let the throes of her dissolution resembl" the agony of her birth, and as ehe was horn, so let her expire; amidst the shock of contending armies, the roar oi battle, the thunder of cannon and the eroans of the dyinc; let her name he blotted out from the nations of the eatfh. and the smoke of her expiring fires darken the broad heavens like the folds of a funeral pall. The Los Angeles Times points out that this extremity will never come. Hich above the dark clouds of war the eye of faith beholds the sweet yisfas of peace ppaee purchased on the blood-stained battlefield, but which will endure when the conflict is passed and the cries of the combatants are hushed in the stillness of death. It may cost us twenty billions of dollars to defeat this last desperate assault of autocracy asrainst democracy. What of it? We have the money and the credit. It may take five millions nf our best and bravest men. Well? They are ready. They are "Marching along, marching along; For God and for country they are marching along."
WHAT WAS IT?
The Calumet Record says editorially this week: "Hammond is making th same mistake that South Chicago made years ago. Local merchants will close their stores at 6 o'clock every evening hut Saturday. Evening being the most convenient time for shopping and also convenient time for clerks' recreation, the merchants listened to the clerks. - Xight watchmen will soon sirike. for day work.,. Will the Record please inform us what the mistake wa-s that South Chicago made?
CALM OVER THERE.
Aynone who knows London will not be surprised to hear that it has remained imperturbably calm during the great battle. The more serious the news the more London could be felt steeling itself, the more, to ue tti" old familiar simile, the British bulldog set its te-ih. Not London alone, of course, but the whole country as one man. The strain was Intense, but there were no outward indications of it; except for the eager buying of papers a the newsboys carried Haig's latest communiques along the streets. In the trains the people seemed more silent, less cheerful than usual, perhaps, but the theatres and music halls were full as ever, says the Christian Science Monitor.
MILLER'S MISTAKE. "Do the newspapers print ihe news? lx they fell the truth? We are half inclined to believe that perhaps Mayor Fred C. Miller of Michigan C;y. ani maybe, some of his legal advisors, will be less skeptical o things

The Knstlish realise their need of houses and one department of ;he government, which is given over to the study of reconstruction, is looking into the .situation. Recen'ly a great labor conference was held at Leicester and there a "resolution was adopted callinu on 1 he Government, either to establish a legal minimum wage for all workers to enable them io pay an economic rent, or to extend the Kent Restriction Act and make grants 'o the local .'irphf rities ,,f the difference iho actual tost of the approved new house scheme and th- pre-war cost." And we further read in the London Chronicle that: Councillor Hands i Leicester!, who seconded the resolution, said that, before building houses, the authorities should tackle the ques

If ti:e Covcrnr.ient were roin.r to pay 7.". per ceir towards the cos of buildinc. t hey should step in and say that th local authority should not ha ve to gi 2os or "Os a yard for land now valued ar Is o- Is nd a yard, i Cheep i. The resolution, containing these standards w-ps adopted. Whatever is done we may be sure that the workmen's houses to be erected here and in England at government instigation will not suffer from either speculative land prices or lack of healthful conditions.

"MOTHERING" SOLDIERS. Tn spite of the disapproval of "god-motherinc" of soldiers hy the war department and widely circulated last fall, letters from girls and women asking for the names of soidiers who would like to he written to are constantly received. The letters go to Mrs. Phillip North Moore, head of the department of healih and recreation of the woman's committee of the council of national defense. In reply to thesp letters Mrs. Moore continues to state the policy of the council in regard to furnishing the names of soldiefs, hut cites Indiana as showing a way that women can look after soldiers that have no relatives or friend3 without the danger that a nation-wide system of "godmothering" would incur. The woman's committee in Indiana has systematically made a list of the soldiers of the state who have no one interested in them and the women as a group make it their business to see that none of them suffer for want of comforts and attention as other soldier receive. "In this way the personal welfare of the soldier v looked after hy the women of the state,' said Mrs. Moore. "The sending of food to soldiers, which is simply a source of waste, is discountenanced and all thrif i.'done for them is under intelligent and instructed supervision. Any state may take up the idea if the demand for looking after lonely men seems to make such a system desirable."
