A noted educator writes concerning the Lutheran schools the following: "Lutheran schools are not un-American but thoroughly American in character and spirit, in that thy not only Inculcate hut in themselves exemplify that one great American principle, the separation of church and state. We know that, the public schools cannot and should not teach r'luion. since that would b taking over in the part of the state certain functions of the church, therefore a violntnn of th Constitution. And since o-i that account Lutherans found and support f'e.r own schools where it can b successfully done what cannot be in pullic s-hpob, they are living exen-pl'f,-cations of this truly Ameri-an rrtnciple ef our Alnerican crrFtitu;ion Nor is this all. This principle j furthermore expressly taucht in these .-chools. This all the rno-e because n:any lMh'-rans that came here in colonial days and later d d s- precisely to exrnpe. oppression arising: ftoui the mixing up of the state and church in the oil world monarchies. Furthermore, the teachers in these schools nro all rnen rvho have been born here, and are imbued with a h e a ' t h y American spirit. The teaching cf the secular branches such as spelling, grammar, history, jreography. etc. is done much as n the puto'c schools and largely bv those of the same and similar text bocks. It is o!e;ir that they are American 'n character and spirit." "In the second place tiie Lutheran schools a-e not a detriment -.- a menare o our country, hu a d;st;nct blessing because they train and produce lval and patriotic Arreric3n riliTens. This they d not do bv- a lot of teaching of the spread eac! variety. They do it in a mo'-e thorough going manner, n a way that produces more substantial results. Patriotism, love of country. ohed;ene to the laws of the land, which, we take It. are essentials in good citizenship, are for Lutherans part of their religion. And as stated above, the teaching cf religion besides the secular branches is and always has been for Lutherans trie rr.a-n reason for founding and eonductir? their schools. Lutherans fully subscribe to the statements fiem Daniel Webster. Gladstone and Washington saying that Christianity. Instruction in the Christian religion makes, for the best and highest type of citizenship. They unreservedly accept the Bible as the word of God and as such as the only basis of faUh and morality. And as the Bible in many places urges obedience to the laws of the land upon all Christians, eood citizenship is for Lutherans a matter cf religion. Thus the children of these schools learn among-oth-er things Luther's small eatf chism. This contains a so-called Table of Duties, among which are scripture text teaching th proper behavior toward
