DOOM OF THE GERMAN-AMERICAN PRESS. One thousand newsboys in New York have refused to either display or sell German newspapers. We may expect newsboys in other cities to follow this example. This is indicative of the way the public feeli toward the German-American press, but that feeling is even better reflected in the way subscriptions have dropped. Incomes of these papers are also declining. No one is going to shed tears over the decline of the German-American press. The bulk of it has showed a reptilian attitude since 191-1. Smell of German money still clings to most of It. Most of the German papers are wholly in disrepute and even the American citizen, able to read German, are ashamed to have in their possession any of the abendbladders, abendposts. kaiserzeitunga or staatespost. Without doubt the New York newsboys could not reconcile themselves to seeing American newspapers with casualty lists of American soldiers on the same stand with the German papers.

harder ye' is it to say whether these strikes, or any of them, could have been prevented. The Foard says that the chief cause ef strikes in this period was the increased cost of living and the failure of employers in many cases !o anticipate this; another reason was dissatisfaction with the cost-plus system under which a ci eat deal of industrial activity was carried on; and a third wis a belief by employes that their employers were making undue profits which they were not ade

quately sharing with their help. There are all measurably excusable reasons. To them the Board might have added another, which may not be glossed over. We mean the attempt of some labor union leaders to impose the closed shop upon establishments whore American citizens were expected to do their bit for America but from which these leaders would exclude them if they did not, carry a union card. This is wellnigh the unpardonable sin in economics when t nation is at war. WHAT HE WANTS FROM YOU. I'ncle Sam i asking Indiana folks for only $:;" each to u against the Hun. Hill the Hun has already taken from each of his subjects nn-.re than ?-'o and ho will take all he needs in addition, r. iUio-it i -ccir.. Theie's the difference - and it's worth fighting for. Uncle Sam pledges every dollar of his 250 billions worth of resources to repay the money. P.ill 'he Hun isn't making any promises except that ho will make America pay an indemnity equal to the cost of the war. probably twenty times the Silo now asked. Hut the fellow who is holding back on an nun' of tb.o security may as well admit that be would rather give his money to Hill the Hun, for if he has bis way Hill will pet it an; way. by conquest, force, rut hlessness, savagery and ail the barbarism thai 'kul'ur' implies. The American who has given '.0 isn't exempted from further liability, eiiher. If he has another thirty, multiplied ten times un. and then some, he must come egain and again until he thinks and acts in accord with the strongest determination to win this war.

NO QUESTION THEN. News from London says that evidence that German fighters do not subscribe ;o the official Hun propaganda that. America is of little account in I he war, was revealed by the Ilritish attack on Zeebrugge. "Donner und blitzen," it's the Americans, was the cry of the German gunner when the British were first discovered at the landing on the mole at Zebiuege. It was not, but it is considered significant, lhat the first thought of the Germans was ;ha; their new enemy had taken the offensive. However when the Yankee? do get stalled the iluns will have no doubt about it.

AMEN, BROTHERS, AMEN! Two cities in these parts are being badly "shown up" in this third Liberty Loan drive. They are South Bend and Chicago. Chicago "the home of the wealth of the middle west" simply can't make its quota; it is lagging behind furiously. Even such Teutonized states as Wisconsin and such alienized states as Minnesota and such Germanized districts as St. Louis and Missouri and such countryized states as Nebraska and Iowa made their quotas by the time Chicago had slumbered along at the fifty per cent mark. In Indiana such foreignized towns as Gary, Hammond, Michigan City, LaPorte. Goshen and Elkhart all have made their quotas; but proud South Bend, where the News-Times has sizzled for war since 1914 and where the Tribune has done about the same, is slacking. Thee cities Chicago and South Bend are showing us just, what kind of stuff they are made of beneath the veneer. The papers of the?" cities, by the way, howl and scowl at slackerism in the individual. But the community of slackers is in no sense worse ihan the individual slacker. Shame on both o them. Laporre Herald.

BACKING SCHWAB HERE. All the plate mills, structural shops and in fact the blast furnaces and steel works in the Calumet region are backing Charles M. Schwab, ihe new director-general of shipbuilding to the limit. Schwab will need no urging to the west. In selecting the Bethlehem chief to head the ship work President Wilson has picked the. right man, Schw-ab has a record of triumphing over failures; he is the premier steelmaster of America. Misfortune has no terrors for him. Hurled from the thron of the steel trust by financial politics he set out to build a new throne. He did. It is more powerful than the steel trust throne. That is the kind of man Wilson selected,. In this region ship material producers will worth with all th more vigor now that they have such a brilliant chief.

FUTURE OF THE LOCOMOTIVE BUSINESS. Future of the locomotive business concerns us here because the American company has a site at Gary and 'he Baldwin one at East Chicago where each intends to erect sooner or later a plant that will measure up to their eastern projects. If the recent history of the business has been bright so is the period ahead of it. But the next decade is to be a prosperous one according to the Baldwin's president. He says: "I have seen the sta'ement that when the war is ended France will require 5.V10 locomotives to replace its war worn railroad equipment. The locomo.ive works of this country ate capable of producing 7. 00(1 locomotives annually under pressure. Allowing for a recession in business immediately following the conclusion of hostilities in Europe, I confidently believe that there is fuliy ten years' capacity production ahead for locomotive shops of this country in meeting the replacement demands, as well as the new- development requirements of the railroads of the United States and Europe." This is the most encouraging news of the locomotive industry that the country has received in years.

WHAT BATTLES INDEED. We feel perfectly in accord with the Muncie Press in claiming that the least that the government can do if it allows young fighting men of fighting age to occupy soft jobs in Washington and elsewhere that might as well be held by older men, is not to decorate these youngsters with uniforms and military titles. What right has a clerk in the ordnance department to a mililar ytitle. anyway? What batMes, except political ons. has he ever fought? Still, there is a course of reasoning by which his right to a title might be bolstered up. According to one eminent defeated statesman a few years ago. "Politics is hell. Ergo, "two things equal to the same thing are equal to ench other," and if the young man has been a good political lighter he may figure out that he is a genuine soldier. Under no other interpretation that is called to mind just now can Ihe practice of dubbing civilians with military titles and clothing them with military uniforms, be justified.

UNPARDONABLE TODAY. ! i The National Industrial Conference Board has an impressive title and a recent report from it contains figures that are more impressive still. There were

z.ozi etriges in tins country, tne i;oari say?, oi wpn April 6 the day we declared war upon Germany- and October 6, 1917. The cost of this in money is hard to compute; the cost of this in production more difficult still to estimate. And

BRINGING THE WAR HOME. The Third Liberty Loan drie is serving to biin

war home to Indiana people. In Marion county a patriot sued his wife for divorce because she refused to assist in saving money to pay for bonds. In another instance when a prisoner was asked why he hadn't contributed to his wife's support, he pleaded loyalty to the nation and a desire to avoid the appearance of treason. Asked to explain, he said: "You see, judge, she was horn in Germany, and I'm not going to give aid anil comfort to the enemy." The judge had a keen sense of humor, but he didn't fall for ihe stall.
