ESTLIBG BOUT Referee Awards Decision After Men Have Been on Mat Over Hour. CHICAGO. April 20. After one hour and ten minutes of wrestling Johnny Meyers was awarded the rereree-s creclslon over Ben Rueben in their match at the Haymarket Theater last night. The decision of Referee Thiry met with the approval of the fans. Meyers having shown to better advantage during the entire match. The match drew one of the largest crowds of the season and considerable money changed hands on the result. Rueben. who Is a sailor at Great Lakes, htd a large following among the jacklos, while the Polish fans strung along with Meyers. John Olin and John Frieberg staged the first bout and wrestled one hour to a draw. William Demetral flopped Hilmer Lundin after twenty-seven minutes of wrestling. IS IF L IS CHICAGO, April 20. Champion Jess Willard, when called on the telephone at his Rogers Park home last night and informed of the Camp Grant proposition, said it sounded all right to him. Jess remarked that Col. Miller has the match, however, and the business will have to be done with him. Jess wanted to fight for the Red Cross some time ago and says that he will be glad to to have some worthy war fund swelled by his championship fight with Fred Fulton. This makes it look pretty good for Rock ford. STATE OFFICIALS T ST. PAVL, MINN.. April 20. Final negotiations to bring Jess Willard and Fred Fulton to St. Paul to decide the heavyweight championship on July 4 were sharply halted yesterday afternoon. An official intomation from the state safety commission that the bout would not be permitted if public opion opposed it was the reason. Col. J. C. Miller and Twin City promoters announced that possible sites for the contest were inspected, but no development of importance was announced by Miller or his associates. It Is understood Miller may not make any further move until after a meeting of the safety commission next Tuesday. Col. C. M. March of the safety commission said the commission on Tuesday would consider the matter of permitting the fight. "Public sentiment can control the situation." he said. As a number of protests against the fight have been filed with Gov. Burnquist and the safety commission, none of the men affiliated with Col. Miller cared to forecast the result. Charges that the telegram of protest from a newspaper association of Cleveland were "cooked up" were laid before the commission yesterday in a telegram from Claude R. Diegle. II SETTING FOR TITLE GO Martin Aids Plan to Land a Big Battle for the Soldiers. ROCKFORD. ILL., April 20. Big Jess Willard and Fred Fulton will fight for tin heavyweight championship of tha world at Camp Grant on July 4 if the combined influence of officers and men i in the war city can bring the big battle to the cantonment and away from pure- ! ly commercial interests. Gen. Charles H. Martin, commander of the Eiphty-six division, yesterday set his seal of approval upon the proposal to swing the big bout f'om Minneapolis to Camp Grant if promoters of the fight can be prevailed upon to meet the patriotic appeal of fighting men. He backed the idea in his usual dynamic manner, turning details of the plan over to his aid. Lieut. "Dynamite" Jack Eddy, for execution and promising his enthusiastic cooperation. Zdeal Place for Battle. "The National army has fostered boxing and has brought it the popularity it deserves." he remarked. "We can't put too much emphasis upon the need to foster the fighting spirit in this war training. If it is possible to bring the championship bout to Camp Grant, which seems the logical place to stage such an affair In war time, it will be a splendid thing for the division and for the manly sport." Military men in camp bring forceful arguments to bear in favor of makiny the world championship bout a national army affair and staging it in Camp Grant. They declare that with the nation at war and the boxing game featured through the division training schedule it will be unfair to allow the biggest boxing event of the decade to be operated commercially while every facility is awaiting here to make the fight memorable In the world's boxing annals. Open Air Arena Planned. It is proposed that a vast open air arena be erected in camp with facilities to seat 30.000 or more spectators and with standing room available for the ue of all soldiers in the cantonment. Such an arena awn its the work of contractors in the natural amphitheater in the heart of Camp Grant, where open air entertainments are planned for the late spring and summer. A limited number of reserved seats will be constructed for the use of civilian sport followers, who will find Camp Grant easily accessible from Chicago, and whose money will ! cover the purses for the two fighters and Taxes Soon Dee Patronize Home Capital by borrowing any amount you need from ti to $300 to pay your taxes or any other bills you may hav3.
