WHY THE HUN FLAGS? In the lodgeroom of the Saxon Turn-Wrein at Tolleston, Gary, the American flag is displayed and in numbers. But nestling inside a glass case and covered with oil cloth is a silken standard, which shows on one side ihe fl35 of Germany, on the other the flag of AustriaHungary. Xow why this ourward profession of loyalty and the harboring of the flags of the Hun nations, especially the standard of the German empire? Does the Saxon lodge believe that some day ii will have a chanace to display these silken rags? If the Saxon-Verein is true blue in its Americanism it will at once proceed to destroy the enemy flags. Are there any more lodges and societies in Lake county harboring Hun standards?

TWO KINDS OF PATRIOTISM. Mr. Farmer, you have broueht a lot of idle land into tillage this spring. You are going to raise all the grain and forage and live stock your farm can be made to produce. That's one kind of patriotism and a very necessary kind. Every farmer who brine an acre of land into cultivation is a soldier on the firing line for liberty and democracy. But there is another kind of patriotism that is just as necessary. It is just as necessary that the stuff you produce shall be put at the disposal of the fighting forces as it is that you should raise.it. That means money. You have to have money to pay for the labor of farming your land and producing grain and stock. The government must have money to buy your produce for the fighting men in France. Money i absolutely necessary to buy food, munitions, clothing, ships and medical stores. You are doing your duly in raising the c'rotis. that is very- true. But in a war like this one, no nun does his full duty who does not do all that he possibly can. r.rlng out the grain you have stored away. Sell it at a fair price fived by the government. Bring out the money you have stored up in the hanks or hidden away in your iron box behind the barn. Every dollar is urgently needed. Invest every idle dollar in LIBERTY BONDS'. The government will repay you in a few years. Meantime you will receive interest at the rate of 4T per cent, with valuable tax exemptions to make the investment better. INVEST EVERY DOLLAR YOU CAN IN LIBERTY BONDS. Every dollar you bring out of concealment means Ten Dollars added to the fighting capacity of the United States in the World "War.

A SPLENDID ORGANIZATION. Hammond has come to take the activities of Orak temple's splendid drum and bugle corps for granted and accepting them as a matter of course without realizing what the organization means to the city, when as a matter of fact the corps is entitled to the fullest meed of praise for the magnificent work it has done since war with Germany broke out. Not only has this body become familiar to the people of Hammond but to Gary. East Chicago and to every ciy in the region for its patriotic demonstrations. A year ago when Hammond sent its first body of volunteers to the camps the drum and bugle corps of Orak headed the street parade. Three times during the present week has thp corps turned out to participate in street parades for patriotism. In the interim of a year it has voluntarily, cheerfully and gratituously offered us services on scores of occasions for war purposes. Indeed, it is a quasi-war body. Its splendid music has stirred many a patriotic street parade with martial tone &nd many delegations of boys across the water will never fcrget the day they marched away beaded by Orak's drum and bugle corps. The organization has turned out in all kinds of weather on all kinds of occasions at much individual sacrifice and inconvenience, but they have been most enthusiastic about it and a vote of thanks and the highest gratitude is due these fine musicians for the patriotic service they have done their city and country. Perhaps some day public acknowledgement will be made o? this fact, but that it has not been made outside of these columns doesn't matter a bit. . They are working for Uncle Sam and proud of it. PERHAPS THIS VILL CLEAR IT UP. A valued reader of this paper stys he cannot under stand why it is that the government is so anxious that everybody able to finance the purchase of a Liberty Bond no matter how small the denomination, be included in the list of" subscribers. It is a question which naturally arises in connection with this loan as it did with the two predecessors. Many have been curious, no doubt, as to why the government, having authority so to do, docs not go in directly to the Federal Reserve bank or to some repository and simply requisition the money needed. Perhaps we can clarify the matter. Uncle Pam is anxious that the distribution of these bonds be to those who are actuated by something more than a mere lesal obligation. Uncle Sam's appeal is to their personal concorn their individual in'erest in the nation's business. The government would have Mto man of limited moans obligate himself through .-ubseriptton to Liberty Bonds in 5'jc'n wanner as to induce saving and thrift on his part, as matters of n'0"ssity. This involves, primar'.y. the elimination of non-esses tia Is, a reduction in his appetite for luxuries. He must dispense with the use of foodstuffs rendered more expensive because of enforced transforation. This

PATRIOTIC INVESTMENTS. Law and order underlie all investments. If life and person are insecure everything else is in danger. That is the reason why the French peer wrote 'the lines: "There is only one Future that of our Country! There is only one Foresight -Our Country. There is only one Economy Our Country!" No matter how many farm mortgages you may have; no matter bow many skyscrapers you may own: no matter how many flat buildings you may have for rent, or haw many factories you may be operating every investment you have rests on the sovereignty of the United States of America. The slightest danger that confronts the United States acts as a depreciation of every piece of property you own. Your farm is valuable to you because the United States of America has enacted laws which insure your right to the fee and title of your Jand. Anything that weakens the authority of the United States weakens your hold on your farm. Anything that cheapens the United States of America in the eyes of the nations cheapens all the investments you have. Anything that tends to bring the nation into subjugation to foreign powers, tends to bring your investments to a position of danger. Every shrewd investor every wise property owner every sane workingman knows that the Eafety of all persons and of all property of the United States rests on the eafety of the United States as a sovereign power. If. the United States is lost every dollar of our invested capitol is depreciated or entirely wiped out. We are engaged at the present time in a despera'e war. The issue is our right to remain "free and independent.'" If the military tyrant of Europe beats us we must be his vassals and his slaves. To whip him and retain our liberty and to insure our independence, we must win a complete victory over Germanay. If we fail our mortgages and flats are worthless. The moral i.-: INVEST IN LIBERTY BONDS and WIN the WAR!
