CHAIRMAN HAY BUYS IN HAMMOND Among the most interested spectators in Hammond's great Liberty Hall dedication was II G. Hay. Jr., of Gary the chairman of the drive for Lake county. He was impressed with the parade and the celebration and the bond selling. When R. H. McIIie, one oi the cncgctic bond salesmen, met Mr. Hay and aiked him if he had bought ar.y bonds Chairman Hay smiled and said, "Well, I've got to buy mine in Gary, you know." Mr. McHie wasn't a whit disconcerted but energetically went after the distinguished Gary banker hammer and tongs. The result you ask? Oh, pshaw, nothing to it. Mr. Hay bought a bond in Hammond and was glad to do it. "Couldn't get away from those live wires," he said.

(Liberty Hall.) The ded. cation of Liberty Hal! and the launching of the third Liberty Loan , were auspicious events in Hammond which will occupy prominent places tn the history of the city. The week-end was crowded with patriotic demonstrations, stirring speeches, great activities. 25.000 Ui Parade. On Saturday between the hours or 1:00 and 8:00 r m. H5.000 people paraded the streets of downtown Hammond carrying flags and led by ten bands or music. They filled Liberty Hall and DeLuse. Theater to capacity and thousands were turned away. All business was suspended for the afternoon. From the farthest corner of the city to the heart of the business district buildings were wreathed In flags and bunting. A Coincidence. It was a gala day despite a drizzle or rain and marred only by the threequarter million dollar f.re at the Standard Steel Car Company's war munitions plnt one cf the most costly fires iu the history of the city and perhaps l"" work cf pro-Germans. That such a instructive blazo of probable dastardly origin should take r'ace cn the city's most patriotic holiday is a grim coincidence. Clarence' Darrow and Dr. Wrfl. LP" n Bryan, president of Indiana University, were the speakers Saturday afterno-.u and M- K. Foley, chairman of the state council of defense, delivered the night address. All Glory to Poles. Sunday afternoon between ten and twelve thousand Poles of Hammond and AA"est Hammond held a patriotic parade replete vith eplendld formations and bautiful floats.
