MAKE THE ALIENS DO THEIR DUTY. Levy Mayer's plea that alums either he compelled to complete their naturalization and therefore become sub.jt-c' to the draft or else be deported is perfectly just. It is due to young Americans of draft ape. We should not compel Americans to fight when able-bodied young aliens, enjoying the advantages and hiRh wages of this country, beg for exemption on the grounds of their citizenship.

WHY YOU MUST BUY LIBERTY BONDS. "Uar is a glutton that lives on livs and riches. There 1b no limit to the devouring greed of war. A lonp as there is an unconquered life, or an undevoured dollar war is hungry. A1ien war attack; a nation there is no choice every able-bodied man knows that he must fight now or later. Selective drafts may miss a man here and there for a few months, but if the war goes on a time comes when every man who can walk and carry a gun must po to the colors and fight for the very life of his country, his family, himself. When war attacks a nation there is no choice every dollar is subject" to the call of mobilization. Pome of the dollars escape for a time and stop in their safe investment places earning profits for their owner. Hut' if the war poe on long enough, every dollar must tome out and Vai'sVuhrTer the oAlCr. ? In time of war, when the ver;.life of a nation ii teinc decided on bloody fields, money has no choice between courage anad cowardice. Every dollar of property in the United States for the life and death war ag;;inst tyranny, autocracy, slavery and foreipn aggression and vassalage. The government says: "The Nation is fiphtinp for its life, bend ua your money. We will give you LIBERTY BONOS, secured by all the wealth and sovereign taxing power, bearing four and one-fourth per cent interest, anad protected by a pood sinking fund, with tax emptions to make the loan better. Avoid ihe extreme necessity. INVEST IN" ALL THE LIBERTY BONDS YOU CAN."

STANDARD OIL'S NEW ATTITUDE. As was commented on in this newspaper recently the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey has adopted a different attitude toward its employes. But since that writing the company has made even fur; her overtures than its earlier plan for workmen to name representatives, who will meet regularly with officials to talk over grievances. Now comes the company with a ten per cent wage increase, insurance, pensions, sick benefits, a scheme to build model houses, and the proposal that employer and employes choose delepates whenever they want to talk about, raising waee-e. All of this is very good and it may mean much to employes of other concerns. As to the attitude of some labor leaders one calls it a "'slick John I. trick to keep the men from organizing." Another savs the real i.et of th" company's democratizing plans will come if the workmen say they wish to form unions. But whatever the attitude of ihe company is towards workmen it is significant that labor is getting a bigger deal, also that the masters of the Standard Oil sense the ti'frd towards improved social conditions. In view- of the old Morgan idea of an industrial autocracy such as he erected in the steel trust fifteen or sixteen years ago anad the gradual realization in so many quarters that good treatment of workmen means belter workmen one can say that the outlook for labor grows rare ropeful each year.

PROFITEERING.

WILL C. 4. O. GO TO GRIFFITH? Is the Chesapeake &. Ohio eyesore about to be removed, asks a Hammond citizen. Are the dreams of the south siders about to he realized" Perhaps so, at least a number of the employes of the C. & O. railroad in Hammond have been notified that they may be required to take up their residence in 'Griffith, Indiana in ti e next vear'or so-r-Jr- The information has gone out thata the C. & O. has purchased a large piece of acreage east of Griffith for the yprds and terminal phops purposes, it is understood that Griffith is to he the divison terminal. Hammond people say this project, should not be confused with that by which the Erie railroad bought several hundred acres of ground between Highland and Griffith for yards and terminal purposes. Both projects are in line ith the general plan of the railroads' to abandon 'yarda -"inside of the proposed electrification zonei TJilrraiS(? Trunk having acquired land near Lansing and. the- Illinois Central between Harvey and Homewood. Ey w ay of a parting Flap on the wrist it is understood that officials of the Chesapeake & Ohio railroad have let it be known that they are getting out of Hammond on account of the well known hostility of the city toward the railroad. This hostility has developed for the reason that - the railroad did not take Into consideration the nature ke development of Hammond's south side as a high V:,;grde residential district. j.- Instead the railroad was projected so that it ran " through Hammond's finest residential district including Glendale pArk where $20,000 and $30,000 homes were built. Kenwood and Hyde Park were afterwards developed as high grade residential subdivisions and the

In -connection with the Hog Island scandal the hristian Science .Monitor berates profiteering and adds: It cannot truthfully he said that since April last, big business has come up to public expectations. It has not justified it s reputation for efficiency hy anything it has done on the Shipping Board. It has accomplished what was reasonably expected of it in getting out lumber, in getting out coal, in making mun.tionR, in managing the railroils. Nations that boasted less of their capacity lor d )in;; big th.nga in a business way have Inn-.- better in pushing war work forward than has t ie United States. On top of many other failures on 'he part of big the breakdown of Hog I .l.in.l, with its n'temiant business to meet the u"mand.' of the nation sir.d its allies, and as if to cap the climax, the breakdown at Hog Island, with its auendant flood os accusations, has come along, and the public not only feels greatly disappointed, but feels greatly chagrined and humiliated.
