fighting heaviest. Hindenburg forces arei putting less ginger into their assaults. '

British soldiery doea not believe the comparative -iciet of the battlefront means the engagement will die out, according to dispatches from William Phillip Slmms. On the contrary they believe it wlU ro to a finish, ending in a great decisive engagement which win en dthe battle and probably the war. This may be regarded as one of the most significant thingg in today's news. , It shows the British won't be conteat merely to stop the Arive. They want to make this the flaal struggle to press it to the knockout which Idoyd George declared must terminate the war. The capture or Montdidier was the surprise c a day that appeared otherwise to show the Germans held at all points. Until this retirement it had been presumed fighting in this vicinity had. not progressed more than three or four miles west of Roye. Haig's report showed the British holding in tha Somme region and taking prisoners and munitions as well. Increased enemy activity was noted in the region of Arras, west of the northern tip of the offensive. Wood reported the Trench making a remarkable defense of the Oise lino and daily increasing the danger to Hindenburg's left flank. Increasing difficulty in the German progress has begun to worry Berlin newspapers while there are intimations Hindenburg himself is troubled.
