EVEN A BETTER WAY. We do not entirely agree with the New Yorker that the beyt way to fight German propaganda is "to get men from the front to tell their stories." It is a good way but not the host for that purpose. It in perhaps the best way to arouse apathetic oOiils who even today don't realize that this country ia at war: those selfish, ignorant, lazy persons who have to be shown outraged Delgiuni and . French womanhood, maimed children and crippled and blinded soldiers or Uncle Sain before they btl'eve it . And even then such is the gross selfishness or d-tise mentality of this kind that they are likely to say: "Well, why did they tight?" The only way, it seems, to fight German propaganda to get the propagandists and when they are got to punish them. Shoot them if necessary. We have done nothing along thin line yet, thanks to the supineness of the Depart men? oi' Justice, we seem to ignore the fact that by our tolerance we are actually conniving at the stabbing of our soldiers ia the back.

RIGHT NOWS THE TIME. Are YOU awake yet? Isn't your blood stirred to the point of tear and ap prehension of what might happen to America when you read of this bloody cataclysm that is going on in France? If it isn't, friend, there's something wrong with the stuff that flows in your veins! You'd better be apprehensive. You've "been telling your friend, "Oh, everything will be all right. Germany can't w in." Germany CAN win. Germany is winning. ( Germany WILL win if you and every other mother's fon in this country doesn't qui? "bunking'- and "bragsing" and "crabbing" and "whiniEg." This Hun horde that is boating against the British front in France, like the angry wave? of (he ocean, will blot out civilization if it is successful. You've got to quit kidding yourself and patting yourself on the back. What can I do? we hear you ask. You can give your full devotion to the successful prosecution of the war. You can fight the disloyal and the slacker as you would the Hun on the firing lino. You can be for America in your home as well as at the shop. It is high time to put some feeling, some concentrated national feeling into this war. It is OUR war. What are you doing in the shape of SERVICE? You have bought a Liberty bond and given a few dollars to the Red Cross and let it go at tha. WHAT SACRIFICE HAVE YOU MADE? ANSWER THAT? If you haven't made some sacrifice or are prepared to make some sacrifice, you wan? Germany to win!

FIENDISH NURSES. In nearly all the Allied prisoners' .statement a reference is made to the revolting behavior of the nurses of the German Red Cross Society. In the whole of the testimony there are but three or lour instances of Red Cross nurses showing :ny tiact; of humanity to the British, prisoners. Lance Corporal J. Abbott, Dorset Regiment, speaks of getting water from lied Cross nurses "occasionali ." Captain Gi'iliiand, L. X., Lanee, related that the doors of the eau!c truck in which he, a "lying down case,'' French Zouaves and Indian soldiers were confined were pulled open and Red Cross women, when tliey heard that tb" prisoners had had n food "or three day?, went to get them some sausage sandwiches. "Rut before they could give them to tis they were prevented by German officers, who said, 'These are Lnglish prisoners, and they are to have ni? bine' " But no intervention by the military was needed in other cases. The Red Cross women showed a positive hatred of the British they refused snj thing ?o them, however desperate their need. It may be explained hat a- every railway station there was an elaborate installation of food and drink and medical appliances presided over by women wearing the lied Cross unifoi tns. These showered attention on the German wounded, and would cive food and drink to the French prisoners. For the British they had nothing but foul abuse or worse. "We saw some German Red Cross nurses." says one prisoner; "the only thing I renie:nb- about them is that some of them spat, in our faces."

UNLESS WE WAKE UP. -Unless wc wake up." says the Good Housekeeper' "we're going t'. lose this war. England muddled through two years, but favorable circumstances kept her from paying the supreme penalty. We shall not be so favored. The Eastern front has gone; the Western front cannot be held indefinitely. Unless peace by negotiation comes before the summer the price of unpreparednes? and delay and our easy-going intolerance of incompetency in high places, there will be at least IOO.OuO of our boys sleeping the hero's sleep somewhere in France. A man that makes excuses for delays that are avoidable should be insvantly dismissed and punished, for delays mean live, and lives are more precious thr.n any man's profits, or apy prfcedent. or any man's tenure of office Any family tha? will not save shou'd be strictly limited to the nutritional 1 1 quiremeni s o! its members. Anyone who plots again? or binders -.be country, so that one effort goes wrons. should meet the fate of the spy and the tratior. Shall we be tender with such and send our sons to die? We are in a great war. All the ruie.-i have been broken by the enfni;-. It's our life or his. ICi's strip to 'he soul and get in."

PRIDE AND POMP OF WAR. How would you like to be a lieutenant in the Textile Branch of the Equipment Section of the Production Division of the Ordnance branch of the War Department of the I'nited States of America? That is what they are advertising for. They want men with some experience in the producing end of such thing as duck, webbing, blankets, yarn, etc., the rank to be 2nd or 1st lieutenant. Juet why a man experienced in this line of work should have to don a uniform, leather putees and spurs and carry a riding crop is not made known, but if twenty years from now you wish to s:t on t'he front porch straining grape-juice through your mtistiichios end imperial while passers-by address you as major, here is your chance. And your doting daughter can entertain her nice young man by hauling out the red plush album and exhibiting you in your regimentals whilst each, particular hair of hia is made to stand on end with tales of your prowess and heroism in the sectors of duck, webbing, blankets end yarn. Of course a man clad in civilian clothes and called ".Mister" could never perform the functions of this office. He would be a pari;.ii anions the staff officers who sound the glory of the martial Baker. No. siree! If you wish to take this job in the Textile Branch of the Equipment Section, etc., etc.. you must be the very model of a. modern major general."
