" The original resolution, introduced a' a former iiierting. prui'e-l Secretary Baker- by name and deprecated the attack that was then bemsr ni'ide on him at Washington. Thi resolution v,as rc-r-rrt:d to a committee at the time. When this committee brought in a stibsiitute lesolution. Finally the resolution was sent back to the committee for another revision, and the resolution at finally adopted was the result. Those who favored ih" original resolution, naming Secretary Baker, charged that an attempt was being made to put them in a hole with the first revision, and they demanded the s- cond revision. Another matter that came b. f u-e the council w as a full page ndv.-i t isment that appeared in some of the daily papers of tlie state a few clays ago. advising workingmen to remain in their home towns and not to be drawn away to other places by promises' of higher wages. cent ejection as Republ if an national ' han r.ie ii. Ade is just no win l'lorida, but lie will return soon, and it i believed that by the time l.e arrived La. k home the Governor will be ready to announce b;? appointment. There has been considerable speculation iti regard to the chairmanship of the state council of defense hie .f the points fiiscuss-'d freely by lo.-al poliiicians ts whether the new 'bun-man should or would be a Republican or a Lieriiocrat. Some of them think the Governor should appoint a Peicc'rat, :o show thai iliere is no politics in the make up of the stale council of defense. Ever since Will Hays was appointed chairman of that body there has been criticism because he was also Republican state chairman, and seine of the statesmen think the Governor could disarm further criticism by appointing a Iemocrat to succeed him. The name of Meredith Nicholson, the Indiana novelist, is the Democrat whose name is most frequently beard fn this connection. It is believed here that if a Democrat is selected Nicholson will get the place. Hut it is not thought thai the Governor will pay any att.nt.on to the politics of the case, or try to i.iiike any politics out of it. The resignation of Hays does riot take effe t until 'he Cover nor has picked a chairman to succeed hin.. He will continue S chairman until then, and he will continues to he a member of tic- state council of defense even afterward, cm! will devote as much time to the work as possible.
