Three Michigan Central passenger trains that left Chicago last night were stopped at Gibson by the storm and because a freight train was off the truck this side of" Michigan City.- The trains barked into Hammond and the passengers went to the restaurants for nourishment. They increased the city's population by several hundred. In Gary traction traffic between Hi.imond, Crown Point. Hobsrt. Valparaiso and Tolleston came to a standstill, ftroadw'ay traffic was practically paralyzed. Besides, few motor cars braved the snow drifts. Tho snowrtorm also caused 5,00 construction men in Gary, to cease theigwork. ' Relief Calls Are Expected. As yet there has been no loud demand for relief lrom charity societies but it is expected and that very shortly for the weather conditions will no doubt cause, the coal situation to be seen et its worst. Many poor people live from hand to mou'h fashion as far as coal is con- j corned and complaints from them have j already been registered. Coal dealers j do not look forward to the beginning j of tht year with any degree f anticipatlon.
