C OIen.) Handel's Messiah, the annual musical festival which is given in all enters of u'Mire a? a Christmas celebration. u t . luniphamly carried through by the hlanimond Municipal Choral society, un-to-r the able direction of Mr. Samuel I". :.rt 'ii .'it thr- l-'irst M. K church on iUi.sell street last ever.ing. 'Although the attendance wa not as huge as when thiF beautiful oratorio a given its premier last season at I he DfLuxe theatre, it vn very closely attended and reverently, though enthusiastically received. Grat credit is due the Choral Society for n splendid work, and although its membership has been seriously affected by conditions incident to war times enlistment on the part of some of the. male members and varied activities on the part of the women the quality of tone and certainly of attack were all that could be desired. Without exception the choruses were executed with rise and finish. The -lectiin of soloists could not have been improved upon, and those of Hammond's muMO lovers who were not in f. tt'-ndance may well regret the passing of an opportunity to hear such competent artists. A certain indication of their ability is the fact that the lenor and contralto are to sing on Sutiil.iy next with the famous Apollo Clun of Chicago, while the soprano and bass have been heard in his part a great many times. Miss Harriet Case, soprano, brought to her work a voice of pure and beautiful quality, singing with a certainty and poise only to be acquired by long experience. Her singing of "Rejoice Creatly" was a high light in the performance. Miss Ruth Simmons, contralto, wa enthusiastlcaly received by her audience, and justly; he rich mellow voice and winning personality dominating her performance, especialy in the singing or " He "Was Despised." Mr. Grant Kimbell. tenor, who has sung this part in a number of cities, brought to the oratoria a voice of vibrant, dramatic power together wltn thorough appreciation of his associate rit t ist s. Ha was heartily received and in the conclusion of "Thou Shalt Dash Them" rose to the heights of" artistic interpretation. Mr. Thomas Remington, bass-bari-tonc. sang with the power and virility that only a man of his stature can command, carrying his audience by sheer force coupled with exceptional ability. His rendition of "Why Do The Nations"' concluded a performance of genuine merit The accompanists. Mrs. George, lfauser. organist. and Mrs. W. H. Mikesrh. pianist, supported both chorus and soloists in a manner clearly demonstrating artistic appreciation and reverence for the score. The glorious closing chorus "Hallelujah" was fittingly sung by chorus and soloists, concluding th oratorio in brilliant stle. It is to be hoped that "The Messiah" will become a permanent institution here, as it is in other centers. Mrs Carrie Katsos celebrated her birthday anniversary on Christmas day I v entertaining at dinner at her home, ', Gostim street.
