GERMANS AXD THE STEEL BUSINESS. Dispatches from Belgium tell ci the m&nner in which the German3 are destroying the steel works in that country, which would Indicate that they are preparing for the time when their presence will no longer be Inflicted on that unhappy land. The Germans are ;ther wrecking the Belgian steel works or dismantling them for removal with other stolen goods to the fatherland. The great CockeriU works la being deitroyed, with parts of It confiscated. Destruction is' going on at Liege. Blast furnaces at Ongree have been wrecked, and nine of the rolling rnills'there removed. At Londoz, Ilaumont end other places there Is also felt the ravages of the bun. Had America instead of Belgium been invaded perhaps the Germans would now be wrecking and dismantling the mills and furnaces at Bethlehem. Homestead and Pittsburg. Happily they are not.

FEDERAL SCHOOLS FOR DRAFTED MEN.
One o? the significant queries in the' questionnaire now being answered asks whether the registrant, if he is to be ordered into service, is willing to attend beforeh-and a training school at home. In this connection the government is already formulating plans for a system of vocational education adapted to the military work. Xo doubt young men who are handy around auto3 and motorcycles will be given a training in motor lore in night schools, established at home. Electricians and irchinists may be trained in coast artillery and machine gun workl respectively. Clerks and accountants may expect train'ng along the lines of army paper work, druggists in their lines, meat, grocery and restaurant men In comissary work, and clothers, contractors and supply men in quartermaster service. It Is to be hoped that tha work will also Include preliminary infantry training so that men now dumped into camp without this asset will not be at sea. Incidentally, in regard to the questionnaires, don't fail to get one, if you are within the draft age. It's your place to see that you get one. Don't think you can blame Uncle Sam. If you don"t get one and answer it, the penalty Is being classed as a deserter with one year in the federal prison. Don't think you fool Uncle S?im! GO TO IT, RING! , The Chlrajso Evening Tost gets very peevish because King Lardner. the humorist, criticizes the use of the word "Sammy." Lardner points out that the soldiers d6n"t like it. They don't like it, as this paper has repeatedly Bald. Lardner is right and tbe Pot should pull in Its horns. We have received a score of letters from old!er boys deprecating the use of th silly, senseless
arnellatioa and TIMES reporters have been instructed to discontinue the
"Sammy" stuff. Can you imagine a strapping, husky six-footer, armed and
equipped to the teeth, out fo kill or be killed, tagged with the namo "Sammy Boy?" Why it's enough to give bim nausea. We don't blame the soldiers for rising up in their wrath. As one of tem wrote, "You might as well call Tet eys or Sissies t.s Sammies." We hope Lardner keeps up - the fight against the Sammy piffle, and if the Post had any gumption it wouldn't make itself so ridiculous. The Indianapolis Star is another offender In this regard that needs to take a tumble to Itself.

which purchased. Q. What is a Thrift Stamp? A. It is a stamp costing 25 cents, to be applied in payment for a WarSavings Stamp. It does not earn interest. The purpose or its issue is to enable people to accumulate in small sums tbe amount necessary to pay for a War-Savings Stamp. Q. Where can I buy them. A. At postoffices, banks and authorized agencies. Q. Why should I buy them? A. Every dollar loaned to the government helps to save the lives of our
S men at the front and to win the war. ,

TIMES FASHION DEPARTMENT
LADY'S WAIST. By Anabel Worthington.
LEAVE IT TO JOSEPIIUS! Formal complaint has been made that the government has been swindled m the matter of the envelopes for mailing out. the questionnaire to the conscripts. Theso envelopes came in bundles supposed to hold twenty-five each, but it was generally found that the packages raa short from two to ten envelopes. Where the purchase aggregated many millions it can readily be sen that the graft was not a bad one, and no surprise is occasioned by the announcement that the contract was awarded some unheard of concern in North Carolina, where Josephus Daniels hangs out when at honiti. And to some other alleged manufacturer in the same place was given th contract for the cabinets for filing the answers to he questionnaire. The south is in the saddle. Fort Wayne News.
