A. F. HenUcy of I ndianapolis. state director or the American Red Cross spent lat evening in Gary, conferring wflh the head of the local board. Mr. Rentley is advocating a consolidation of the individual chapters in each county, in order to simplify the work at state headquarters, which is gigantic in its present proporations. This would not interfere with the present organizations in any manner, excepting that reports would fe sent to Indianapolis in one large, rather than cjuite a number of small, accounts, and thereby condense the bookkeeping at headquarters to a considerable degree. Th? movement would realty be nothing more than a federation of the chapters. C. Oliver Holmes received the appointment last evening of district representative on the state executive board. At the meeting in the T. M. C. A. yesterday morning of the local board, the question of putting through another membership drive before. Christmas was discussed. Oliver Starr of the hapter. advised taking no action during the holiday time, as there are constant voluntary memberships coming jn ancl the work has beei progressing so rapidly and well that it would seem advisable to let matters rest during the holiday season. It was also announced that a national movement is new lieing made to provide service flags for all homes in vv hb h one or more members belong to the Red Cross. The aim of the organization is to raise the membership to Jo.oon.non people.

CROWN rOIN'T, IND, Dec e. The

city council met for Vh- ir last regular ; meeting cf the year last evening atid transacted quite a grist of business. He- ides allowing the regular hudget of monthly bills, the council authorized the waterworks committee of the city council to take the initial steps toward the purchase of the. lot north of and adjoining the waterworks plant. The waterworks committee has recommended the purchase of the land which is owned by Ernest H. Hixon and the deal will probably be put threush. The city is badly in need of additional ground around the water works plant for the sinking of wells and the council has determined to secure adclitional territory while it is available. The council passed two ordinances on third reading by a unanimous vote, one fixing the salary of the city marshal at ?K0 per month, and the other repealing the ordinance passed in April, 1312, providing for the employment or a deputy city clerk and the ordinance passed about tha Mtiw time providing for the deputy clerk salary. The council instructed the safety committee in conjunction with the chief of thfl fire tleparttnent to investigate the methods whereby the farge bell at the fire station could Ve sounded bysome electrical deviee. giving the department members and citizens a better chance to hear an alarm when sounded. Major Krost made a most befitting farewell address to the council; stating the pleasure he had taken in the duties in serving as mayor for the last four years. Mayor Krost stated that he left the office with reluctance, only on account of the very cordial relations he had experienced in his capacity as the exerutive head of the city.
