$12,167.74 There are still more pledges to follow, all the captains having not yet reported in full, but this wiil show that Whiting has gone considerably "over the top." Jacob Koval. arrested by Officer Mikosh on complaint cf W. Wojcak. charging him with assault and battery, was released upon furnishing a $100 bond to appear later for trial. The Whiting- council. K. of C, will be represented at the meeting of the councils of the Calumet region to be held at Hammond tomorroy. There will be candidates from Hammond, Whiting, East Chicago. Gary and Valparaiso, this to be one of the largest exemplifications ever held in tha history of the Hammond council. Thos. S. Koyle of Whiting, is district deputy of the order. Harry 1". Hughes of Whiting, who has been in the officers' training camp, has been awarded a commission as second
lieutenant in the signal corps aviation!
The"Vhiting friends of Mr. Hughes will rejoice with him in his good luck. The members of the Sons and Daughters of Liberty will meet at the home of Merle Gardner on Clark street, at 7 o'clock tomorrow night to go to the Methodist church, where Kev. Kogers will 'preach the regular Thanksgiving service for the order. City Engineer Arnold Exton-Porter, who was in the officers' training camp at Indianapolis and was later transferred to the coast artillery at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, has been given a commission as first lieutenant in the coast artillery. Mr. Exton-Porter experts word next week as to where he is to be sent. He arrived home " yesterday morning looking hale and hearty and will remain here until he is ordered to camp. Joe Delisimon of 712 Fred street, who volunteered his services In the army two years ago and some time ago was promoted to orderly general, has now been promoted to corporal and intends going to the officers" training school in January. The young man hos received three medals. One for good aim, otie for oh. dience and one for guarding the Mexican border. He expects to leave for France soon. The regular meeting of the Eastern Stars will be held Monday night. On Tuesday night the local chapter has been invited to Hammond, it being the official visit of the grand matron. On Wednesday night they are invited to Indiana Harbor. Mesdames Koy E. Green, Thomas S. Cook. It. M. Andrus. Louis Gordon as representatices of the civic section of the Fortnightly club attended the sessions of the juvenile court and court of domestic relations in Chicago, and Mrs. Maud Allen, who also accompanied them to Chicago, attended a lecture on "Child Welfare."
