A TEAM WORKING CAMPAIGN.
The Y. M. C. A. war fund campaign in what is known as i he Calumet d'ytricr as distinguished, from the Gary district, comprising th cities of Hammond. WhitJnsr. East Chicago and Indiana Harbor, was a tnagniflcent demonstration of team work driven by that prince of team workers. George Hannauer, seneral manager of the I. H. Belt railway. Sixty-five thousand dollars was raised by this organization which christened itself the Committee of 100. It was an organizatiou that moved things, one that had superb backing, one that just simply wouldn't be beateji. It was a great feat, because the money was nil raised in small amounts, in driblets.

.RECOVERY OP THE HOLY LAND, ! So fast is history being made t-hat the military operations in Palestine sre .almost obscured by other events in the far-flung drama of war. Yeti thus operations mean much. Christendom bids fair to recover the .Holy T.and from the Turk, and now that the allies are on the verge of gaining! r victory for which hundreds of thousands laid down their lives in a hopeless cause in the time of the crusades interest will center toward the east, j It would be fitting, indeed, now that. Christmas is approaching that the!
gteat holiday this year would be signalized hy the taking over of Jerusalem and Bethlehem. AVith such a prospect in sight the ghosts of Peter the Hermit, Raymond of Toulouse, Godfrey of Bouilon, Richard Coeur de I.ion, the long line of popes and the endless company of princes, dukes, barons, knights, priests and common pilgrims of the eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth' centuries must be on the alert. Christendom may realize the dream of the ages.
And Its People
TEMPERANCE, NOT PROHIBITION, 'VUi ED. The recent action of the French Academy of Medicine in unanimously resolving that the soldiers of France fchould receive with their daily ration a much wine as the sailors in the navy received was started by a letter from Prof. Landouzy to a colleague which has just, been made public. In this the famous president of the Parts Faculty of Medicine deprecated the confusion between the alcoholism of northern Europe, which is the effect of drinking spirits, and the habit, universal in southern Europe, of taking natural wine with meals. Landouzy insisted that, the best way to teach a nation to beware or alcoholism was not to prohibit, wine but to instruct the children in rational eating and drinking. He believed that, every Frenchman could with advantage drink daily wi-h his meals a litre (approximately a quart) of natural wine, which at the price of 30 or 40 centimes i or 9 cents) would supply him with 500 calories daily at a price seven liraos less than that of the same number of calories purchased from the butcher. SOME OF THE VIRTUES OF THE WAR. Every now and then sine? the great, conflict began in Europe we have tried to present a chain of reasoning that war is not without its benefits to human society, and despite its destructive forces as far as a certain portion of life and material things are concerned, if helps to strengthen t.he moral fiber of millions. Perhaps one of the most surprising utterances along these lines is an article by O. F. Bridge in llibhert's Journal, who begins by quoting General Sherman's statement that "War is hell." and who quickly follows with this assertion from the present master of Balllol college: "War is an intellectual awakener and a moral tonic. It stimulates men to think, an 1 thinking is what we most lack in England. It creates a conscious unity of feeline, which is tta atmosphere needed for a D"w start. It purges away old strifes and sectional aims, and raises us a whole into a higher and purer air. It helps , us to recapture some of the lofty and intense patriotism of the ancient world." Bridges points out th Battle of Jena creating a new Prussia, a new France arising from Sedan, and while the Crimean war brought no great
Venefits to France and Eneland yet it was followed by the emancipation
the serfs in Russia. The Muscovy empire lost in the Russian-Japanese r. yet its people gained: "here canie the duma. In the stormy limes of Hamptlen. Falkland and Cromwell public virtue was never so hign in England as

Died of Premature Old Age! How maDy times we hear of comparatively voung persons passing away when thev should have lived to be 70 or 80 years of age. This fatal work is usually attributed to the kidneys, as, when the kidneys degenerate, it causes auto-intoxication. The more injurious the poisons passing thru the kidneys the quicker will those noble organs be degenerated, and tha sooner they decay. It i thus the wisest policy, to prevent premature old age and promote long life, to lighten the work of the kidneys. This can be done by drinking plenty of pum water all day long, and occasionally taking a little Anuric (double strength) betore meals. This can be obtained at almost any drug store. You will find Anuric more potent than lithia. for it. disaolvee uric acid almost aa water does sugar.
