SOMEBODY S WHY OFF The Times recently printed a letter from John Graham at Rockford, 111., saying there was a shortage of tobacco ami imploring that some be sent. County Manager Roy Seeley was one whom the letter touched and he sent a box of smoking to the Hammond boys. He received the following to his surprise last night: r.ockford. III.. Oct. "5, 1917. Pear Friend: We received your tobacco today and thank you very much, but it is not tobacco we need as much as it is a few- lines from home. We can get all of the tobacco we need and all of the boys could do the same, if they didn't play cards so much, for we have five Y'. M. C. A.'s here in camp, and each regiment has their canteens, so that they can get anything they need, and the man that kicks is no good, for we have enough for any man to eat and wear, and they only drill us from two to four hours a day. There are five of cur home boys in my company and they are all well and happy. It snowed here yesterday and made It very muddy here, and today about five thousand of us went to town to take part in a large parade, so it was a very busy day for us. Wei!, you can tell all of our friends that this is the life for us, and that we are willing to do out bit, all we ask of them is just a lew lines to cheer us up a little for we expect to eat our Xmas dinner over the little poiid. Well. 1 think that I must close for now. as it is time to turn out the lights, so give all our regards, and tell them that we are happy, and for them to drop us a fevv lines. H. W. WORLET. Co. The Cabarrus County Grand Jury- will decide probably before right whether a former trial "should" be ordered on evidence tending to show he murdered rich Mrs. Maude King, his benefactress here on August 29. It was six days after the globe-trotting Chicago's woman mysterious death that her protege and confidant. Means, faced indictment on the deed. Fourteen of the IS jurors must affirm the indictment. In that event, a date will at once be set for formal trial in the Superior Court here, Judge Cline presiding. Demand by the state for cither a change of venue to an adjoining county of the district, it for a venire of jurymen from an adjacent county, was considered probable in event of an indictment. Local sentiment here where the Means family has resided for manyyears, it is felt, cannot altogether be relied upon. It was not considered unlikely, ei'.'ier. that the defense will seek a postponement unti! the next, or January, session of the Superior Court should Means be held. This would throw the case under the jurisdiction of Judge James L. Webh. who v. ill "ride" the c.rcuit nt the beginning of the year. Besides witnesses appearing at the. preliminary hearing here September 24 and 25. Mrs. Mary C. Meivin, sister of Mrs. King, vvill be. summoned to the stand by the state. It was thoug.it doubtful as court opened this morning that a panel can be obtained from Cabarrus county folks.
