ALL OVEJt BUT THE SII0UTIN(5. If. as reported, the Supreme court is a tie on woman suffrage and m-omen can therefore vote in Gary, the registration statistics contain no joy for the OurtU-.lohaso.t combine. The wards wtatre most women registered are the solidly republican wards of the city. If women do vote, it means an additional 500 to 60O votes for the republican candidate. Gary Tribune. On the other hand, it the women can't vote Hodses lo?es from 500 to 0i'' votes: Wei!, They can't vote, so Houses caa't be elected. Even .the opit'orous Homer, running madiy round in a circle between Scjlla and Charybdis in hid doddering zeal to help the I'. S. Steel candidate, ought to ,e able to see that. TLd-ruling of the Supreme court yesterday on the suffrage question puts an end to both Curtis and Hodges as mayoralty candidates. Mayor Johnson is as good as re-elected, boys. There's nothing to it now.
NARROW WORK. Despite the fact that there are hundreds of thousands of acres in this state that lie waste and fallow every year, the W. T. C V. at its annual nicr--ing in Anderson this week agitated and passed a resolution before they adjourned asking the state to stop The growth of ll.OOfi acres of tobacco within its borders, in what they call a food conserving movement. The intentions of these women may be all right, but it is quite evident that there are many people in Indiana just as good and holy as they are w hedo not agree with them and look upon their action as extremely narrow and unnecessary. If the Indiana W. C. T. U. ha.d advocated the conservation, tillage and usage of the vast amount cf waste land in Indiana for the purpose of growing foodsiu3s, we would have shouted their praise, but to seek to kill the tobaccotaising Industry in the state we shall have to take issue with them. The good women picked the wrong- time to ptart their ami-tobacco agitation. They may nor know it, but there are hundreds of thousands of yourg men in the world at present who want tobacco more than they do food. And a gTeat many of them ar-? our boys; yes. many of them from Indian?. The Indiana W. C. T. V. Fhou'd calmly consider this statement: The old world today has a new viewpoint on the tobacco habit and the old one will never he recovered. About the only joy left in Europe at present is tobacco, and the reprobate cigarette and the villainous pipe are good angels for untold millions. In the world war millions are ready to give up life for the ratise they think Is the best, and tobacco is the minimizer of suffering, the giver of a moment's pleasure where these men are ready to give up ail. Perhaps Boni of thse good W. T. C. V. women of Indian, moving in their narrow circumscribed home circle, have never really sensed thia war. Perhaps they do not. know that there are women who have spent therr lives in fighting what the W. T. . V. call "the tobacco evil,"' who across the dark waters of the Atlantic are begging tobacco from anybody; yes, they will Bteai it if need, to put it into the mutilated or pain-racked hands" of the far-off brothers of ours, and glory in the consciousness of that deed ehar.p cl into a virtuous action. Tobacco? Why, i has kept up the nerve and spirits of men who have been called upon, are helnc called upon, and will be called upon, to do the glorious work of super-men. Tobacco? It ia the inspiration of some of the finest deeds of heroism that men have been called upon to do in trench or No Man's Land. It is the, flrbt thing that the soldier toy returning from unconsciousness" into houra of torture and horrible suffering calls for. It is the last solace for many a poor shot-ridden body over there a? the spirit of it wings its flight info eternity. The Indiana W. C. T. U. Just now bad beiter let tobacco alone. ' he world want tobacco if 'he Indiana W. C T. I, doesn't.
The "sine prices for milk, tbfit has prevailed durinfi the month of October are seh.-duled for November. This was determuied at a meeting of the Milk Producers Association of Indiana in the assembly room of the i ;.imer ial Club in Gary yenterday af It rnoon. One hundred and fifty were present and represented the Milk froducrs from all over the state. Following a brief talk by 11. S. Norton, president of the Garv Commercial club, lit which be

For years there b is been o m rap on between the Mlik Producers and the retailers in Indiana, Illinois and 'Wisconsin. With (be forming of the Marketlne; Company the shippers will handle the milk direct through their own association. Twetity-cifcht shares of stock were sold, more than was needed and nsked for. Although it was not learned when this will 0 into effect, it is thought some time next month. It is also said that there will be a new milk rate the first of December. whether hither or lower it not known.

SHE WOULD LI K K TO 1)0 IT The New York Sun finds littbj cause for alarm in the brLtllng announcement that the German government probably has extended the submarine zone to the Atlantic coast of Carada and the United Sta'es and to the waters of Cuba has caused little of either surprise or distress. As far as we in this country can discover the zone of f rightfulness is the world and the liability of the innocent to sudden d.-ath exists everywhere that German imperial hands tan reach. The possibility of submarine attacks on this side of the Atlantic is not new in any sense. Allowances are made for it and have been so made for some two years past. The one U-boat venture of war near this coast, the day's work off Nantucket, taught us what to o;peoi. Whether Germany can gather enough skilled m-sn and large submarines for an armada of really fearful proportions is fctill a question. That she would do this if she could is taken for granted. In the meantime the mo-- that v-p bav to tear, perhaps, is that we shali
