That was a little more than two years ago. Today, how things have changed! Why isn't this crowd friendly with the mayor of Gary today? Why is he, whom two years ago they thought was bigr enough end capable enough man to be governor of Indiana, is the tareet of their foul abuse, fake reform commissions, and all the political tricks known? Here is the answer: MAYOR JOHNSON KEFTSXD TO BE CONTEOILED BY THAT OANO, TO TAKE DICTATION TROM XT. So today Mayor Johnson is a villain in their eyes. They want a mayor they can handle.

years ago before the time of
the trains and modern conveniences mail was carried by "peny express." Now when great railroads are a vertex ed and all trains must be rushed into gn ernn-ier.t service the mail train might be side-tracked. To offset difficulty which might arise if the rnnii train was rarlially abandoned the Maxwell auto company, Detroit, agreed to prove to the government the efficiency of "auto express' meaning that mail could be carried just as conveniently by auto as by train. To do this they declared they could
make the trio from Detroit to Chicago
and back simin In 24 hours. At one o'cloek todsy they were one hour ahead of their schedule. Leaving retroit at one o'clock, eastern time, this morning they were due in Chicago at two o'clock, middle wpsttrn time, this afternoon. Th? car. driven by Roy McNamara. arrived at the Maxwell agency, Chicago, at one o'clock. Upon taking water and gasoline immediately started its return trip. Police Serjeant Borchert cf Hammond and Roy Dec ker, a Chicago Mas well agent, accompanied the driver from Dyer to Chicago and back to Hammond. Along Calumet avenue the car made an average of 62 miles an hour.

Joseph Fischbein of Detroit. Mich., was a Gary sight-seerer for a few minutes today, having detoured for that purpose upon his return to Detroit from Indianapolis where he had gone to reclaim h:s stolen automobile and have the thieves arrested. Joe, as he was known by the pioneers of Gary, opened a harness shop in 1S05 down near the bridge in a swell 12x18 pine board shack, considered in ihose duvs an edifice, and all he had to do was work hard and take in the money, having no sidewalk to clean nor grass to cut, and a memento of "them happy days" is a $35,000 business block on Broadway near Seventh street. Joe is 6till of the opinion that Gary has just started to grow and that in a few years mere Gary of today will be antiquated but net forgotten.
