WHEN MEMBERS of the Reserve Officers' Training Camp at Fort Sheridan began receiving their commissions, their first thought was to notify relatives and friends, sweethearts and wives, wherever they might be. To do this a rush was made for a telephone somewhere in Lake County! STOP FOR A MINUTE and think how the calls must have piled up! Chicago, Detroit, Milwaukee, Louisville, Davenport and a score of other places. And not only must each place called for be reached, but every one of this lot of eager, happy, insistent fellows was intent on getting his call through FIRST and getting it through quick. RUSHES ARE FREQUENTLY made on the telephone service in normal times and they are always more or less difficult to handle. WITH WAR ACTIVITIES at flood tide the problem increases in complexity, and in the case in point some men had to wait, but all were served, finally. MOST GRATIFYING to the Telephone Company was the fact that every man was patient, all seemed to realize our position, and did their part in helping us by being good natured. CHICAGO TELEPHONE COMPANY

c-efling classes will follow the same plan. "Th man with a small business will be glvrn tin)! to close It out with a minimum loss. While the men in tho earlier classes arc being: called, he can be shaping up his affairs. "Married men and others with dependents will not be taken until those in the preceding classes have been exhausted. "The new system will enable existing machinery to complete the examination and certification of the remaining S.000.000 registrants with a speed impossible under the old regulations." IN POLITICS
TIMES 1IIHEU, AT STATE CAPITA!INDIANAPOLIS. INP , Oct. 3. Jamon I. Fry, who is the riffht arm in politics of Stephen B. Fleming of Fort. Wayne, says it is all a mistake about Fleming and' himself starting- campaign for
the election of Mayor Bosse of Evans-
vine as democratic state chairman, although Fry admits that he thinks Bosso would make a good one. lie says, too, that a certain little bee has been buzzlns around Dosse's cars singing "governor" to him. and he believes that Bosse would make a peach of a governor. However, there, has been no denial of the report that Fleming calle'd Bosse to Fo: t Wayne about a month ago, and that Fleming, Bosse and Fry discussed Bosse for state chairman. How much headway Fry is making with the campaign for Bosse for state chairman remains to be seen, but it is understood that it has made a hit with Bo:?se. as well as with a number or others in the party, who say that the state chairman must be a man with money and who is not afraid to spend it. Ther is a good deal of talk to the pffect that the democratic state organization, which has been running along at a rather low ebb for some time berjus" of a lock of interest in politics, could easily he brought out and mad active through th liberal expenditure of his own money by the state chairman. Tt will be difficult for the democrats to rais much money for campaign purposes, because they are out of control of state offices and Jobs and as a general thing the rank and file of
a party hesitates about pouring money into a campaign when Its party is out rf power. This would mean that the state chairman would have to supply the funds from some source of his own. Bosse, being a wealthy man, they say, could well afford to do this. It is understood that Bosse has a very good chance of being re-elected mayor of Evansville this fall, and many persons doubt whether he would be willing to let go of that office to take the state chairmanship, where it would be a case of "all goin' out and nothin' coming in."
NOT TO EXAMINE ALL DRAFTED MEN WASHINGTON', D. C. Oct. 5. The proposal to examine for military service all men registered for the army draft
and not yet called, was killed for the rresent. at least, today when the House and Senate conferees eliminated an appropriation for the purpose from the war deficiency bill, the conference report on which was promptly accepted by the Senate.
