It Is the story over again of the tin-hat which the soldiers first sneered at as a bonnet made for cowards. Secretly. thousands of men want l.ody armor, protective visors for their ryes 'and every other srt of safeguard that Inventive ingenuity can devise. A soldier of unquestioned bravery will admit confidentially that the only reason he refuses to buy the stuff for himself is that he would be ashamed to wear armor while other fellows can't afford to buy it. Some officers of great value to the array have the courage to wear shields, not to spare themselves suffering but to safeguard their services to the forces. Armor has Its faults. It is heavy and expensive and its manufacture in (treat quantities would divert the energies of a great number of skilled Workmen now making other war materials. But the severest tests have fhown that many lives could be saved and many hospital cases averted by protective plates. The case of the tin hat showed how gratefully the army takes to every innovation of practical value in paving lives. The helmet by now has .rvented head wounds by the thousand, many of which would have been fatal. For measure the curved brim has warded oft many shoulder or body wounds by deflecting shrapnel pellets and shell fragments. Dozens of battered helmets, pierced by bullets and chunks of metal, may be skeen rusting In the shell holes after an advance but the inventors never claimed the hat would stop everything. If the Army council ever decides to

adopt armor for the men there is no question that the men will wear it. though relectantly at first. Dr. C. "U". Saleeby inventor of the helmet, may again become the Tommy's friend if the council takes this step. He recently submitted a shrapnel-proof Jacket which has passed several tests. Another inventor got around the weight difficulty by making a fibre shield. This is something like a wartime sea-passenger's life-belt, stuffed with light flexible material. A ma-chine-gen bullet may pierce the hide of the Jacket and raise a painful welt on the wearer's chest but tests show that the bullet gets .stuck in the fibre and dofw not go through. The ciesigners recognize the Importance of shielding the lower portions of the body. No irventor has yet been able to make a mask or visor strong enough to protect the face and eyes against a bullet at short range. The chain visor of fine steel meshes, slightly distended Just before the eye-balls, has been more satisfactory than any of the others. It will fend off small shell fragments and chunks of hand grenade, however, and these missiles have caused many cases of total blindness 'n three years of war.
