THE JEWISH ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE WORLD WAR BY ISAAC UNTtaMA3. Associate Bachelor of Arts. Editor TTMCf: Whatever views may have bren hell by ihi individual Jewish rltisrn about the desirability of ihe Unit.-d Slatf-s' participation In the present world war, all voices are now hushed once the step has been taken arid 'the cause announcer!. All thousrhtful Jews bfin to re-
j ahzp now that we have pone into this j cruel business without hat or malice toward any particular renle. but for ! the benefit of r.umanitv. and to mK
the "world safe for democracy." I' must confess that at first I couldn't Quite understand why the United States, the country of real freedom and liberty, should compel her children to Kive their blood for a. couse that, as it seem-
i ed to mo, did not concern us the least j bit. It was only after I read the farm us speech of President Viin on
j the declaration of war that my enihus-j I iiism rose to the hirh.vt rtcrri lf-ish
Patriotism, if I mav iii.ist- it .irrnrrl- f
ins to my own, is of the highest. ! Already Jewish men are enlisting in
! the army and navy. There is a large i j contingent of my Jewish brethren in j these two hrnnrhe of the cerv.re ripht I
now. Even in our city, Indiana Harbor,!
a small Jewish community as it is. has riven her share in a far greater percentage than any other nationality. Furthermore, they were at Vera Cruz, and in large numbers on the Mexican border. We appreciate very much the kindness shown us by the American people, and we consider ourselves as part and parcel of the entire American body. Some of us are even descended from ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary War. Some of them stood by the flajr in the war of 1S12. In the
North and South Jews fought side by side with other Americans in the War cf Secession. Also the Spanish-. interican war cost many Jewish live. I venture to state thit there is not a hrart that beats truer to the 1'mted States than the Jewish. This faithfulness, 1 believe, is par-' ti'-ularSy true of the present war in which the American people h.ive proudly and bravely raised the banner of de
mocracy. The whole origin of Jewish life goes back to this fundamental thought of democracy. Most people Imagine that democracy was born in Greece, for the very word Is of Greek
origin, and Athens was supposed to be
the most democratic city in the world As a Jew, proud of my heritage, I know it better. A thousand years be
fore Athens came into existence with
its 20,000 free men and 400. 000 slaves, the children of Israel lived under as democratic a form of government as
ever existed. Why. then, were the
children of Israel reTeasei from Egypt
ian bondage if not for the sake of making them a free and democratic
people? Why were the Ten Commandments given in the Wilderness? Israel
would have chosen to receive them within her own borders in the Holy
Land. God gave these holy words in the desert, no man's land, to emphasize
the fact that these Commandments
were for all mankind. When the peo-!
pie of Israel wanted to honor their j
leader Moses, they did net call htm ;
king, but Moses our teacher. When
the children of Israel, to their weak
ness, Asked for a king. Samuel without
fear refused them, and when Saui was
finally selected, his rule rested so light
ly on the reople, that the Israelites followed a shepherd youth, David, as
his successor instead of Saul's own
son. Democracy is opposed to royal rule. When Rehoboam taxed, the people unduly, the men of Israel revolted and formed another kingdom. A royal head with autocratic government was never essential to the government of
Israel.
Today, when democracy is fighting its
greatest battle, I as well as all the
Jews who are taking refuge under the
great principles of American democracy, stand, foremost in emphasizing the duty of the hour. When the hour shall come and call on any one of us to take his part in the battle of democracy, not one will hesitate for a moment to Join the ranks of lovers of democ
racy and fight, as we did in all our
history, the battle of humanity and democracy.

MILLER NEWS. Mrs. A. Carlson entertained Mrs. C. Williams and Mrs. Walls of Hammond
and Mrs. c. Gruener of Kast Chicago on Wednesday. Mrs. C. Wall has had Misses Bertha Zahren. Roundtree and Southerland of Chicago staying with her since last Saturday. Mrs. Wa!l has just received a letter from her brcther. i'rank Clark, who left here Aug. 27th to join the British navy in which he had previously served four years. He is now stationed at Halifax on the "Xiohe" and is due to sail for France at any moment. The town board held its regular September meeting Wednesday night. An attorney for the. N. T. C. was ptesent and objected to the notices he had received anent the improvement of Grand avenue. All previous actions on the paving of this road were therefore rescinded and the board began all over again. No doubt this will delay the opening of Grand avenue till spring. Mike Zelibor was appointed election inspector for the coming election and Gus Strom and O. C. Stiefel. commissioners. Mrs. P. Olsen has been ill with rheumatism of the muscles of the eyes The Woman's Welfare Club met on Friday at the town hall. Rev. Lundahl who is eighty years of ege and has been minister Rt the Swedish church here for many years, is retiring from the. ministry and will live with his daughter in South Chicago. At a meeting of the Swedish Ladies' Aid at Mrs. Carlson's on Thursday p. m. he was given a purse by the members of his congregation in Miller.
