EAST CHICAGO IS TAKING EXCEPTIONS Continued from page one.) August 7 at which time the following viewers were appointed: Henry Batterman. Crown Foint; Harvey Blakeman. Crown Point. an9 ex-officio Ray Seeley, county encineer. There is no record that these viewers have as yet made any report. The matter cam? tip at the noon-day i luncheon of the chamber held yester- l day at the Fhillips hotel at which time! ihP, above facts were reported bv M. E. Crltes who had been requested to ln-veFtlg-ata and make a report. The board of direc'ors think that this street is distinctively n city street and that the re?t of the township should not be taxed to build it. East Chicafto is improving; Forsyth avenue by special nsoesment end thinks Hammond should take care of Calumet avenue in the srae way. The present three-mile gravel road law docs not permit the county board,! of commissioners to improve this thorouchfare. X o pet arouna tne law, n..weve-, Hammond Ins -cisannexed a pottion of its. teriltory as old ury vcW.n the improvement of 1:1th avenue was desired. Alihou?h the time has passed fcr 11ins a remonstrance aga'rst the constrtiction cf Calumet avenue by general taxation, yet it was determined to file the remonstrance just the same because of tho inefficiency and incompleteness of the petition upon which the county is supposed to take action. The remonstrance will be based upon the folowin? allegations: 1. That such proposed improvement will not be cf public utility and convenience. . 2. That all of such proposed im-jj-ovemont except that part which has just been rlisannexed by said city for the purposes of said petition, lies jivithin the corporate limits of the city of j Hammond, a municipal corporation in j North township. Eake county. Indiana, r.nd should in justice to the taxpayers I of said township b? er-tablihed and constructed, if at all, by assessment figalnst abutting- property thereto. 3. That it is an injustice to tho taxpayer of said North township to be compelled to construct streets for the faid city of Hammond by general taxation. 4. That the utiMty ar.d convenience of such proposed improvement to the citizens cf said township Is not such as to warrant the establishment: and construction of same under statute. E. That the petition for such improvement heretofore filed does not sufficiently set forth the beginning:, course and termination cf the highway soug-ht to bo improved. 6. That said petifion does not set forth the beginning- and termination and a general description cf the public highway Bought to bo improved. 7. That paid petition does not set forth a recommendation of tho width of such h'.Khwny or of tho character of the improvement to bo mads. 8. Tbst faid retuion does not set forth what la sought to hi established or caused to be construoted. 9. That fill of such proposed improvement lies within the eaid city of Hammond. Copies of the remonstrance are now in the hands of a committee who expect to get fully two hundred signatures within the next forty-eS:?it hours.
