Defeat Hammond Baseball Club After Many Extra Frames and Splendid Exhibition of Pitching.
(By JINGOF.) The Ga'Iiraas of Chicagro came back to Hammond yesterday and staged a repetition of their July performance t-y defeating' the Hammond ball club, and shutting- them out. 1 and 0. The only difference was that it took 13 innings V1 tm the trick this time. It was a pitchers' duel betweeu Hennlns and Elack. Twelve innings of real "bis league" baseball passed -without a -man scoring. Hard-hit files were poled clear to the fence, different times saw the bases filled, yet each team pulled Iself n-jt of each pinch admirably. In the third frame Hudson, Kenning and Ka-vanagh covered bases and Moll -was at bat. -with only one man down. It looked like a sure score for Hammond when Moll worked pitcher Black for thre straight balls. b;:t Hudson -was caught napptnsr off third and pounded out. Moll filed out to short center: after a hard run to that spot by the Galllgan r jcond-sacker. In the fifth, Finn, of the Galligans. walked, theu stole second. Homme rs followed by driving- a warm one at Kavanagh who threw Finn out at third. Then Brennan singled through short, advancing Kommers to second. This left Hammond in rlmost the same hole that they had Just pulled out of Karaffa was the next GalUgan man up and he poled a long: drive straight down the right foul line, but De Lave pot under it. and his beautiful peg to third Interrupted a sprint from Kommers ttiat would surely have proven fatal. Elack, next up, fanned. In the thirteenth, Maynard rapped a hard grounder to third, the ball struck the base, bounded out of the diamond, and he was credited with a scratch hit as a result. Stein sacrificed, advancingMaynard to second. Then Dann rapped out the only double of the game, scoring ifaynard. It seemed that the breaks were with the Chicagoans throughout the whole session. Other than an indistinct squawk from one of the Galllgan supporters that pulled him into an argirrr.ent with one cf the officers and caused his ejection from the playing field, the aggregation of rowdies that usually accompany this team, were very peacable yesterday. The contest lasted two hours and a half and was witnessed by more than two thousand fans. The box score: Gallixarm. r. Williams, 8b 0 Maynard, 2b 1 Stern, ss. GIANTS AND SOX IIFIELDS TWO GREATEST By M. C. HAMIIVrOX Tutted Freii Staff Correspondent.) NEW YORK. bept. 17. Two of the tightest fielding and smartest infields. baseball has ever seen since the erup tion that shattered tho Athletics will be seen In opposed action when the Giants and White Pox mingle in the I world's series. Each is balance at s-c- j ond base bv a fast thinker, a speedy. certain fleldor. and a veteran of hard-fr.nri-,t rtiann!.insh!D eames. Eddie Collins, prince of the second-sackeis, is field captain for the White Sox. Charley Heriog. McGraw's veteran of many campaigns, holds down the same Job on the Giants. Man for man. compared from every angie. the White Sox have an edge at '.nficlding. despite the comparison that is always being- made between McGraw's quartet and the slugging bunch j jvthat once performed for Connie Mack. Inf.fflds of the J100.000 sort have gone out of fashion since Mack used his axa, but the nearest approach to It since has been the aggregation thrown Into the pennant fiitht by Charles Comiskey. Gacdll and Hoiks at first base compare closely, despite Gandll's ex perience and an old reputation for heavy htttinir. I4ke all the White Sox of former years and present days. I Gandll's heavy bat has been lost. Hs is still hitting them regularly and is I one of the pame's roost dangerous i pinch batsmen, but his .300 average has gone. ' Holke is the same sort of a hitter, but is irriore youthful. Their fielfiing offers nothing to favor either man. Each is steady under fire. Comparisons never offered more In a world's series than the respective merits of Charley Hrzog. Giant sec ond baseman, and Eddie Collins, the brilliant second baseman of the White Sox. A terrific hitter, speedy baserunner, brilliant fielder, and lighting thinker, Collins stands out as the greatest second baseman the game has ever known. Even now. after a period o j of batting depression, th-e form.er wonder of the old Athletics, Is striding into .300 form with a vim that holds nothing good for the Otant pitchers. Like all the great batsmen, Collins' work with the mace is natural. Hlttlnp left-handed pitching la only slightly more of a task for him than smashing- the right-handers. MeOraVi trio of sterling southpaws will have little effect on his average, provided he plays in championship form. Col lins has been accused this year of slowing- up as a fielder and of playingstupid baseball, but this charge may be classed' with the declaration that Ty Cobb was slipping. Ty slipped Into the American league's batting leadership. In Hersos; the Giants have a second baseman the equal o-f Collins as a fielder and thinker. The clash of wits between this pair should be fully as interesting as the battle of bats. Heriog-'s battir.gr falls far below Col lins' mark, however, and it hardly can be said he exercises the same Judg ment In base running-. The best baseball In Hersog's career will come out In the f ortheoantns; series, If the Injury to his back doesn't prevent He is purely a fighter. The short series will bring every ounce of effort from his nervous body. At shortstop the Giants have the edge, in experience, fielding- ability and hitting. Fletcher's hitting will carry him over the rough spots where Kleberg might stumble. Fletcher's fleldingr, likewise tops that of the coast graduate, main ly because he is more certain of himself. RIsbergr specialises In lonr hitting-. ! He has been hailed a coercing national star, but hasn't yet attained that form. It was his acquisition, however, that supplied the championship form for the White Sox. In Buck Wearer and Heinle Zimmerman It Is difficult to reach a basis of comparison. The men are vastly different Weaver Is Undoubtedly the I better, faeter fielder, and a faster thinker. Zimmerman's agrgresalveness. heavy hitting:, and personality give mm an edee over many lnfleldsrs. Zimmerman's batting- punch. com bined with that of Benny Kauff. will te the main reason for bets on the Box. He Is playing the best ball of his career and is holding his temper. Weaver Is g-enerally conceded to be the best third baaerman In the Ameri can leag-ue. He Is a good pinoh hitter. fair baserunner, and a brilliant fielder, j nui given to erratic throwing.
