(by mail) Of the thousands of British families who have waited in dread anxiety for1 flna news of relatives poeted as "missing." few have known how much effort was being mede to relieve their fears. The fact that the army contains a large corps of men who spend all their time searching for missing men is not generally known. These searchers, now on important branch of the Red Cross, are the result of a visit paid to France by Lord Robert Cecil in the early days of the war. GOVERNOR WITHHOLDS PROCLAMATION (By Unite! Press.) INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Ay. 23 Because of unexpected delay in preparation of bills for presentation to the extra session. Governor Goodrich today withheld bis proclamation calling the legislature into session. "Approximately eleven bills are in the making,' the governor said, "and If the call should be issued it will he made just as soon as these bills are drawn and ready for presentation. That probably will be the first of next week."

SENATE IN RECESS (By United Press Cablegram.) WASHINGTON. Aug. 23 The senate today recessed until Monday out of respect to the memory of former Senator John W. Kern of Indiana, who died yesterday. Kern's death prevented his nomination as a member of the international Joint commission. Only a short time ago he write his friends here anticipating he might not get well, saying he believed it unnecessary to suggest acticn on a political appointment for him. WASHINGTON, Aug. 23 The war department today announced the appointment of two hundred first and second lieutenants fresh from the artillery training school.
