Ey P. G. HCLDEN. OMMISSIOX men and dealers declare that the supply of seed potatoes on April 1 was 50 per cent short of last year's supply. This is because of a shortage of nearly 73.000.000 bushels ia last year's crop in tlu United States and a shortage of nearly a billion and a half bushels in

the world crop as compared with 1915. This abnormal shortage comes at a time when every effort is being made to increase the production of all kinds of food. For this reason the situation is doubly serious. The demund for potatoes must continue so long as the present war lasta and for several years after the war is over. The season for planting potatoes has not yet passed. In most parts of the United States potatoes can be planted until June 1. Housewives and restaurant and hotel proprietors are urged in a countrywide movement to refrain from cooking old potatoes during the months of May and June in order that the entire stock on hand may be used for seed. Thert will be no danger of an overproduction. We should Increase all root crops turnips, carrots, beets, parsnips which may be stored for winter use. There is still time to plant these. , i . ,
