County Treasurer Erown Issues Edict Regarding Young Fellows Who Pay No Poll Tax. (Special to The Times ) CROWN POINT, i.NU, Aug. 17. County Treasurer M. .1. Brown is going after the fellaw who enjoys the privilege of citizenship and refuses to pay his poll tax. Convinced that there are thousands or dcliurs cf unpaid poll tax that can be collected Mr. Hrown is determined to to after it hard and some young chaps who find Lake county levying on their personal property may be surprised soo i. If they pay now they may save themselves a lot of money. ' County Treasurer Lioun points out that the law compels him to collect this tax and moreover the Indiana State Board of Tav Commissioners has sent the county ofi'icial the following letter: "To the County Treasurer: "Section 10::31 Burns" R. S. 1314, defining the duties of the State Board of Tav Commissioners, provides among other things, the following: " 'FIFTH To see that all taxes due the State are collected. " "SIXTH To enforce penalties prescribed by any revenue law of the State J'or disobedience of its provisions.' "We call your attention to this law. an dwe shall insist on you performing your duty as ,he law provides. At this time an appeal is made to everybody to j be patriotic ard do his duty to the government. This should include duty to' county and state. Every citizen, as a I duty he owes to the county and state, I should pay thj taxes due from him. If all delinquent taxes shall be collected, there will be a large increase in the public revenues. Often these delinquencies are due to 'the carelessness of the officer or his failure to impress the public with its duty to pay taxes. "Serti,.n 103.'G Burns" R. S. 1014. says: " 'County auditors shall not be authorized to credit the trasurr with any uncollected delmrju- ncy for which he claims credit, uniess such treasurer shall show, by proper returns as above provided, verified by his Oith or affirmation, that he has diligently 5,,;i;ht for and has been unable to find any personal property from which to collect such taxes, or that having made a lev y, .he waj enjoined or otherwise prevented frim making sale or collection by a court of competent jurisdiction; and in all cases where he has failec to make demand upon residents who are delinquent or to levy and sell when personal property can be fotnd in the county, out of which to niaite the tax, lie shall be liable on his official bond, for such uncollected delinquency and ten per centum thereon." "Every county treasurer is charged with the total of fill taxes due and is not entitled to credit on this charge unless be can sho- that he has made every effort required by lav to collect all taxes. The treasurer should not stop with collecting taxes voluntarily paid, but he should se that all taxes are paid. "Yf trust that you will see the importance of these suggestions and that it will not be recessary to call your attention to thein further. "Respectfully yours, "STATE BOARD OF TAX COMMISSIONERS." MILLER HAS NO HEALTH OFFICER Town Also Gets Ready for Lake Shore Drive Other News. (By THE TIMES Correspoadent.) MILLER, IND.. Aug. 17. Miller is new without a health officer, Dr. Wharton who held that office having resigned at the last meeting of the town board. The meeting was held partly to hear remonstrances against the paving of Grand avenue from Forest avenue to the shore line of the lake. No remonstrances were presented, so the board authorized the clerk to advertise for bids for a modern city pavement twenty feet wide, the same to be yaid for by special assessment. A declaratory resolution was passed opening up the remainder of Grand avenue tn Michigan street. The . deeds for the lake shore dune which -Judge.' Wildermuth expected to present to the board were held up by some technicality and will not be ready to sign fop another month. PAUL TAKE OVER M. C? CHICAGO. Aug. 17. The separation of the Michigan Central railroad from the New York Central system and its operation as an independent line In the near future has been reported. An unconfirmed rumor is to th effect that the Michigan Central will be taken over by the Chicago. Milwaukee and St. Paul railway. This, by making Arrangements with the Lackawanna road from Buffalo to New York, would complete the lines of the St. Paul from coast to coast. Other reports say that the only changes to be made in the Michigan Central will be in the traffic department, making the road independent of the New York Central. MUCH ENTHUSIASM AT EAST CHICAGO The East Chicago committee, which is, working on the organization of a state j militia met again last night at the, Chamber of Commerce rooms and made I reports on the day's work.
