WILL INVESTIGATE LABOR SITUATION"

f 7 ' Y -1 - ' ' j A

Chief Justice J. Harry Covington. Chief Justice J. Harry Covinjrtoi of the supreme court of the district of Columbia, has recently left Washington for the west and southwest to investigate the labor situation ani especially to examine the I. vV. W. troubles in that connection. VOICE OF .artlg, THE rf" , R E O R L. E WHO W ASTES OIR FOOOSTVFFSf Editor Times; My attention has. been called many times in the past few months to the conservation of foodstuffs. Now that is ii good idea. I have always tontended enough food g' es to waste in this country to feed an army, and I am heartily in sympathy with the movement. Rut yesterday when 1 was called to canvass my precinct and prevail upon the housewives to can. dty and preserve the fruit and vegetables that are going to waste within their reach, my indignation was aroused. The idea of a woman letting anvthin go to wast? when the common people ian1 it is from the laboring man's ievvpoint that 1 am writing this) can barely get hold of enough ford to feed their families, how many housewives after paving the exhorbitant price for the actual essentials of life have any money left to buy fruit to can or pteserve. This! is the first ear in my life a.-- a housewife I haven't canned fruit. Now I feel satisfied to get hold of enough for a pie, still they tell me it is going vo waste all over the country. The houswifehas always heen conservative with foodstuffs. But there is a gap between the producer and the consumer, fcnd I think the time has come for th proper authorities to intervene. When we are paying two dollars a bushfl for potatoes right now and the crop of potatoes has neer been known to be what it is this year, the same thing is existing now that has for some years. When thousands of bushels o:' potatoes ate left to freeze and rot on the track 3nd apples are bought in the spring in the orchard and left to spoil, and eyss are left in st. .taste until they rot. and fruit, peaches especially, are dumped by the boat-load ir to Lake Michigan, when our good food is maliciously destroyed that some c mbine or individual might flourish and our American children goinn hungry. 1 think it is a crime, but what can the common people do but just conserve what little comes within their rea.h and make their dallv appeal.
