Five New Houses Being Eerected for Employees By I- M. KMFFIV ltant Superintendent.
With the coming of so many new industries to the Calumet district housing conditions have become, a son us problem. Taking advantage of the situation, house owners h:in advanced rents to unusual figures, but even this incentive has not attracted enough new builders to relieve the situation. It 1 no longer necessary to advertise houses for rent in this city- The common practice now is u post notices to Keep house hunters away. With the usual far-sighted considnation of the welfare t.f its men. our manage, t.fnt has met the situation by starting to build homes for its employes. These are to he owned and (inflated by the l"n!Nd States Homes Co.. a corporation orgsniwil m this state, for the purpose. Another very desirable accomplishment will be the bringing of our men in close, touch with the people of East Chicago. There hss Ions be.-n a feelins: that the industries of this district had no interest in local aft"a;rs. It was pointed that -.ho men in responsible positions lived in other cities and took no interest in the control cf municipal affairs. The store-keepers have felt tht teo iar? a part of the pay distributions was goin,- to their competitors in adjoining- cities. This will be remembered when our men become East Chicago citizens. The selection of sites for the houses was given thoughtful atteniion. There were not many suitable locations available for the distance from the riant was an importan: consideration. It was desired that the heads of departments should be far enough away from their work to fret a change ofscenery. but at the same time be close enough to be available in case of emergency. The 6avir,g in time and energy now spent by some cf the men in commuting- will be a considerable item. The location that best fulfilled the requirements was the Beacon street, addition, which is or.c of the most attractive rarts of o-.:r city. The fact that most of the property is already developed, and that the subdivision is covered by building- restrictions, were sufficient guarantee of the future stand-
in)? of the district. Tha houses that are now being built are cf 'two-story construction. This type was adopted in preference to the bungalow type in order to better conlorm with existent buildings and to afford more room for lawns and gardens. These buildings will be similar in uts'de a ppearance. but slight variations are being used to avoid monotcn. The exterior will be of Iienison Interlocking Matt faced hollow tile. This is similar to wire cut pressed brick when laid up, except that alternate joints are four inches and eight Inches wide. The use of hollow tile will give mimimum heat conductance, ensuring that the rooms will be cool in summer and warm in winter. Our wives will be most interested in th interior "arrangements. Kach of the houses will have living room, dining room, and kitchen on the first floor. Two of the "houses will have a bath and four rooms on the second floor, and the rest will hae baths and three rooms. One of these can be usd as a Jtn it desired. As a matter of preparedness, the men rr sponsible, for t he design have tried to provide convenient kitchens. Each house will have a package garbage receiver, the ice boxes will have outride doors and the sinks and gas stoves will be high enough to avoid back bending. Judging from present indications, it is expected that these houses wil be ready for occupancy by October 1. The dale therefore should have a red figure on your calendars, as it will mark an epoch in our contentment and the service that we can render the company by kno-wing that our families are comfortably provided for. ED CROWN is the perfect efficiency motor fuel. The best pe-
troleum chemists in the world,
tific data, have established the basic principle of measuring the efficiency of gasoline by the adjustment of the range of boiling points. There is no other measuring rod. Gravity has nothing whatever to do with the efficiency of gasoline. That theory is a relic of the dark ages of the industry. Red Crown Gasoline is composed of fractions, having low, intermediate, and high boiling points, presenting a "continuous chain, beginning at about 95 degrees Fahrenheit and ending above 400 degrees Fahrenheit, with no gaps, each one vaporizing at a different temperature.

Red Crown contains the correct number of low boiling point fractions to insure easy starting when the engine is cold. Too many low boiling point fractions cause, in addition to starting troubles, undue evaporation in storage. Red Crown Gasoline contains , the correct number of intermediate, or higher, boiling point fractions to insure smooth acceleration. It contains the correct number of high boiling point fractions to insure a maximum of power. Too many high boiling point fractions cause carbon in the cylinders and on the spark plugs. Red Crown vaporizes to the last drop, and leaves a minimum of carbon deposit.
