NE"W YORK, July 27. An appropriation of 1 $3,000,000 for the construction of the shipbuilding: plant of the Federal Shipbuilding: Co., the new United States SteH Corporation subsidiary on the Hackensaok meadows, has already been

made by the corporation and work will be utarted immediately. The riant will be large enough to accommodate twelve ships of varying sues up to 10.000 or 12,000 tons at the same time. It is expected to have the plant ready for operation early in January. , While no ship contracts have yet been

made, there is no question that the plant'

from the time it is ready for operation, will have all the business it can handle. In fact, the corporation's own requirements for ocean tonnage, exclusive of government or outside needs, would insure full operations for some time. .

No plans have yet been formulated for the manufacture of aeroplane or submarines, although the charter of the new company empowers It to construct both.

The Gazette estimates that up to the present time the efforts to conserve fuel and man power by the railroads has resulted in the elimination of passenger trains which have effected a saving of about 18.500,000 passenger' train miles a year. " - .Instead of criticising railways for doing their patriotic duty." the editorial cautions the public, "the public and press would much better commend these railway managements which in recognition of the national emergency are taking off service, and condemn those that are standing in the way of the reductions that ire needed."

and Broadway, Gary, for speeding yesterday. Officer Wytow arrested Slymock and Capt. Aydelotte released .him on his own recognizance. Slymoek lives in East Gary.

RED CROSS PRAISES

First Shipment of Hospital Supplies From the Hub Elicits Commendation.

The' Ped Cross workers are very much pleased over a letter received from Mrs. Cudahay, the vice chairman of the hospital supply committee of the Chicago Red Cross 4n acknowledgement of the first shipment of hospital garments made by the Crown Point. Lowell and Cedar L.ake workers. Mrs. Cudahay said the garments were beautifully made and wished the local chapter success in the "Splendid Work." Careless Use of Soap Spoils the Hair

THREE SOLDIERS KILLED IN STORM (By United. Press.) ST. LOUIS. July 27. Three soldiers were killed and half a dozen others badly injured when lightning struck the guard tent at the entrance to Camp Maxwelton. near her$ today.

Soap should be used very carefully, if you want to keep your hair looking its best. Most soaps and prepared shampoos contain too much alkali. This dries the scalp, makes the hair brittle, and ruins it. The best thing for steady use is just' ordinary mulsified cocoanut oil (which is pure and greaseless). and is better than the most expensive soap or anything else you can ise. One or two teaspoonfuls will cleanse the hair and scalp thoroughly. Simpiy moisten the hair with water and rub it in. It makes an abundance of rich, creamy lather, which rinses out easily, removing every particle of dust, dirt, dandruff and excessive oil. The hair dries quickly and evenly, and it lsavcs the scalp soft, and the hair fine and silky, bright, lustrous, fluffy and easy to manage. You can get mulsified cocoanut oil at any pharmacy, it's very cheap, and a few ounces will supply every member of the family for months. Adv.
