n ,epJ:) I 1 fCfi gpcgT snort' Is it possible to obtain any reliable figures giving the number of Germans now resident in thn United States and the number of thoea of German extraction? According to the census of 1010, there were 2,499.200 German born persons In the United States. Within the past ninety yers more than 5,200,000 German have settled In this country. Twelve million Is a safe estimate, but there may be ilO.OOO.OOO or more of German lineage. ' j I would appreciate it very much if you would give me a short history of the submarine mine and boat. When was the first on used, etc? David Busbnell was the first person to build a practical submarine boat with which an attack was made. Iiushnell's boat attacked the British ship Eagle at anchor off Governors island. New York. In 177C The attackwas successful. In the same year Bushnell attacked British vessels at Philadelphia by setting adrift mines to be carried by tha tide. . An error as to the distance and the time of the tide rendered the attack unsuccessful. In the war of 1S12 the British ship Ramillies was attacked near Xew London by a submarine boat which was supposed to have been built by Robert Fulton. It was unsuccessful. In 1&45 Samuel Colt, tie Inventor of the Colt revolver, devised a method of connecting mines by Insulated wires and esplodlng them by electricity. Submarine mines were used abroad In the Schleswig-Holstein war in 1S4S-00 and in the Crimean war, but with Indifferent results. It remained for the civil war In the United States to prove the efBcacy of the submarine mine as well as to develop the Ironclad and the turret. The first successful employment of a submarine in actual warfare occurred off Charleston when the United States warship Ilousntonic was sunk by a Confederate David, known as the "cigar boat." When did the phrase "the beginning of the end" originate? It la attributed to Talleyrand as having been Bald with regard to the "hundred days" between March 1. 1S15. when Napoleon returned from Elba, and June 18, when he was defeated at Waterloo of the same year. Of course If Talleyrand said it he used French, and it is often to quoted, "Cest le commencement de la fin." Who wrote the poem which begins, "I am dying, Egypt, dying," and what aid the poet mean by "Egypt? The poem was written by General William EI. Lytle of Ohio, an ofheer In the Mexican and civil wars, and killed at Chickamauga. A volume of his poems was published In 1834. The title of the poem Is "Antony to Cleopatra." and the Roman emperor is supposed to address the Egyptian queen a "Egypt."

Please give a brief account of. whit is known as "the Trent affair?' in which Mason and Slidell figured ''during the civil war. In October, 18G1, Captain Charles Wilkes, U. S. N., Intercepted at sea the British mail sttramer Trent, bound from Havana to St. Thomas, and took off two Confederate commissioners accredited to Europe, Messrs.
