PATRIOTIC SAVANNAH CHILDREN DO BIT WITH WAR GARDENS
yy 7
Savannah children working in their war gardens. The patriotic children of Savantah, Ga., are proving a real help to Uncle Sam with their war gardens. They are cultivating hundreds of acre, raising enough vegetables to feed the city and thereby releasing much food for shipment to Europe. The city council formally passed an
ordinance setting Saturday aside as the children's market day and creating a market for them in the resi
dential section, where they are permitted to congregate and sell their wares.

GUARDSMEN TO TRAVEL IN DAY COACHES
TUXES BUSIATT, AT STATUS CAPITAX.. INDIANAPOLIS, IND., July 19. National jiardsmen will travel from their home camps to the training camps in day coaches. This means that when the Indiana national guard goes to Hattlesburg. Miss., they will make the trip In day coaches instead of tourist sleepers, which were used when they went to the Mexican border last year. There is a shortage of tourist sleepers, and not a sufficient number can be obtained to transport all of the national guard and the war department has announced that, therefore, all will use day coaches. Supplies of all kinds In abundant quantities are going forward to the national guard training camps, so as to be there for the troops when they arrived. But before they leave this state the Indiana national guard will be supplied with hats, shirts, coats, (cotton and woolen), leggins. shoes, blankets and rines. All other equipment . will be furnished to the men after their arrival at the training camp. Word from Hattiesburg says the camp will be located on high ground. The land is a "cut-over", which means that it was a thick pine woods, from which all of the timber has been removed, leaving thousands upon thousands of stumps that must be dynamited or burned out before the camp can be constructed. This work, It is said, is now under way. Hattiesburg Is said to be famous for Its artesian water, and well drillers are already at work putting down artesian wells which wil". supply water for the camp. The camp issix miles from Hattiesburg, reached by a railroad. There is a river on either side of the camp site, and ther3 it said to be a considerable stretch ofT swamp land that comes up close to tlve camp site. The temperature is much higher than
la Indiana, 109 in the shads being nothing uncommon. Snow falls once in a while but not often.
AUTOMOBILE PIES
TO BE
Times' Recent Editorial Is Borne Out by Dispatch From Washington. Verification of Thb Times editorial that automobile prices within the next month are to leap upward in price and that the time to buy is now certified In the following dispatch from Washington: WASHINGTON, July 19. It Is understood by government authorities that within the next thirty or forty-five days the majority of automobile manufacturers in the United States will announce another advance in price. With many the increase will come with the advertising of their product
for nevt year, which is customary with
manufacturers who still cling to the yearly model Idea at this season. Others

will spread the news by simple announcement of increase. The advance in price made so far during the last six months and those about to be made are not due, as many may Imagine, to the fact that It is the intention of the government to commandeer the output of the motor car facories. Th.e United States army is going "to require large numbers of machines, touring cars and roadsters, as well as trucks. They are to be purchased in the same manner as would be done under ordinary circumstances. Motor car builders wero invited June 9 to submit bids to the government as to the price at which they would be willing to sell their machines and the number that could be delivered within a short space of time. Without an exception, in filing their proposals, automobile manufacturers offered cars at a saving in price and made delivery dates as advantageous as was possible for them to do. It is the cost of the things that go into the motor car that has caused the Increase. There are in the neighborhood of 3.000 parts to the average machine. No manufacturer builds them all within nis own plant. As prices are raised to the manufacturers by makers of individual parts and accessories, they in turn must necessarny increase the price to the consumer. Labor has advanced so that skilled mechanics the only, ones that can find employment In the motor car plants are able to command almost any wage that they ask.

Coal Found Early In Canada. According to First Things in Canada, compiled by the late Georgt; Johnson, dominion statistician, the first recorded mention of coal in Nova Scotia was In 1654. "Coal was gathered in Nova Scotia at a very early date without mining, mention being made of It in 1721. Conl was shipped to France from Cape Breton in, 1743, as stated in a letter from M. Duchambon to the French minister."
