As soon aa draft numbers were, flashed in from Washington they were checked up at the mayor's office at Gary city hall, where records of the three exemption boards were in readiness, embracing between 10.000 and 10.500 names. When a number was reported It was checked on the lists of the three boards. The name of the man drawn from each
district was called off by three newspaper men and A. G. Perry, secretary
to the mayor, recorded them on his typewriter. Carbon copies were made
for the use of the boards and the
three Gary newspapers.
Some of the merchants painted th
drawn numbers on their windows and large crowds inspected the figures. Th American Sheet and Tin Plate company had Oscar Dobrovolsky on hand to
report on all tin and sheet mill men drawn. Among the first numbers that were -lucky" were those held by the two bartenders at the Gary hotel, pop
ularly known as Elmer and Mike.

Company F, First Indiana infantry, Gary, was two years old yesterday. In its two years of existence the company had two weeks' camping in 1915 at Inddianapolis and nine months' intensive training on the Mexican border, June, 1916-March. 1917. On August 5 the
company mobilizes for Hattiesburg.
Miss., from whence It will proceed to
France.
There are 157 men In the company. It
is In the command of Capt. J. A. Umple-
by. its organizer. At the age of 18 Mr. Umpleby was a first sergeant in an Ohio regiment. That was in 1898. Capt. Um
pleby first got Into the national guard twenty years ago.
