AN AMAZING FAKE. One of the most remarkable examples of how people alow themselves to give credence to silly reports -was seen in this locality last night when the story that the draft numbers had been given, out and the numbers themseves were circulated. Many people called THE TIMES to verify the numbers. Representatives of manufacturers declared that the . numbers had been made public. Others claimed to have first hand information from Chicago, as If that city had anything to do with the numbers. Young men on the streets began to celebrate in carousals that they had or had not been drawn. When phone callers wre informed that the numbers had not been drawn, they refused to believe the information. One Chicago newspaper peddled on the streets was soon sold out because it gave the purported information. Even when this newspaper appeared on the street, after wiring Washington to substantiate the story, some people refused to take stock in its denial- Perhaps today they will come to their senses and realize that when the Information i3 given out by the government authorities the news' will be published in thi3 paper- And In the meantime it was a wondrous fake-

A SINISTER LOBBY.

So many hundreds of thousands of Americans are yielding their money, for which they get no accounting, and subscribing to the tenets of a powerful political lobby wholly anti-American in Its conduct, that these givers as well as others with the interest of the government at heart and the repression of any moves to undermine It, must welcome the plan to have a congressional probe of this "dry" lobby. Light on this is shown in a Washington dispatch to the New York World, which includes: "Charees to be made ajralnst the Anti-Saloon Leajrue are: "1. That It is not a sincere institution, but one owned and controlled by a few men who have high salaries and other advantag-es. Although working- in the name of Prohibition, it is declared to be opposed to straight-out prohibition. "2. That ia an agent of a certain company in opposition to or. ganlzed lftbor. "3. That it maintains a system for the purpose of influencing men and conditions in both church and State. "4. That it uses the housewives of the Nation and children In ptartini? boycotts of trade in order to swinsr influential business men to support the immediate proposition it has in hand to work out in the community. State or Nation. "5. That it fakes petitions to Legislators and Congressmen. "6. That it makes threats to force prospective legislative officials . bind themselves by secret pledges' to support the measures it undertakes. "Some of the men in its Washington lobby are said to draw nearly three times as much monev as members of Congress. AVith a total income of $1. 200.000. of which 100,000 is said to be guaranteed at the beginning of each. year, the league has an unlimited source of supply. "It was pointed out today that the league hss always been active in State legislatures when labor questions were bting agitated. This was noticeable, when the Prohibition fight in Colorado served to draw attention away from the controversv between the Rockefeller interests and -the miners. In other States Prohibition measures, it la declared, have crowded Into the legislative 'hoppers' ahead of labor measures. Con. corn that have foug-ht organized labor have contributed to Prohibtion in the name of the Anti-Saloon Leafrae. "(me of the league's methods to secure support, it is charged, is through a plan of bovcotting worked out through auxiliary organizations of women and children. Housewives by this scheme cite organized to ascertain from grocerymen in small towns if they will support tnt leagrue, the inference being that trade will be lost if support is not given." That there has been an atmosphere of hyprocisy, the t'se of religion as a cloak to extend political influence, and that the power of certain prohibitionists has been used to the extent of political and business blackmail, can not be denied. Honest believers in prohibition must welcome the inquiry and the ousting of these sinister influences within their ranks.
