But the noble work was set back when the Gary police heeding the demands of The Tost, that gambling bo stopped in the city, on the following day made an early Sunday morning raid on The Post's editorial sanctum, arrested several members of the staff for gambling and seized the pot. v Then came another further crimp In the "reform" work when The Times discovered that a couple of well known members of the commercial organization in question were conducting a nice gambling game for steel workers and others in the commercial organizatlon'3 building. The game, a profitable baseball pool, had been allowed for momns, much to the chagrin of the common members. Arrests for gambling right at the home of the reform committee of the commercial organization in question and at the home of its newspaper organ set evry steel worker in Gary laughing. 11118 was the declaration of Frank

O. Comerford. former state senator of

Illinois, in the address of the day at

Harrison park yesterday when Hammond formally celebrated the Fourth. Several hundred people were in attendance.

I am-able to say without author

ity," said Comerford, who' has made numerous visits to Washington lately, "that within three months the submarine will not interfere with America. Washington has had Inventors at Thomas A. Edison." The address differed from former Fourth of July speeches in that it dealt with the present and not with the past and looked to the future of America, predicting a reconstruction

of the legislative affairs after the war and a greater freedom.

Comerford was intensely patriotic

in his remarks. He denounced in no uncertain terms the Hohenzollerns and

one of the high lights of the address was his eulogy of American history and principles. He was scorching In

his denouncement of the kaiser and

demanded to see that war lord's cre

dentials as ' tup ambassador of God."

The road to Berling will be open

to 50,000 American aviators, Comerford said.

The road to Berlin will he open

mand great sacrifice, he told the audit rice, and urged those who will remain at home to do their utmost by giving and economy.
