She was last seen leaving a' grocery store at Sixteenth avenue and Rhode Island street, where her mother had sent her to buy buns. For two days following her disappearance a thorough search was made In the swamps and sand dunes around Gary, police, citizens, guardsmen and Boy. Scouts assisting, but no trace of Mary was found. The Gary superior court grand Jury today began a probe Into the notorious west side sewer contract, which has been attacked by Mayor Johnson as having been the subject for collusion proceedings on the part of contractors. Subpoenas lor present and former city officials, contractors and other persons have, been Issued. The sewer contract was Srst let to Helny & Holben, then to the Illinois Improvement & Ballast Company, after the contractors had cut their orig-inal figures J40,000. Citizens want to know why the contractors could cut the price so much.

COUNCIL MEETING At a special meeting of the council of the city of East Chicago, held last night at the city hall-with Mayor Callahan in the chair and all members except Stanley Rasczkowski (who Is 111) present, the following Items of business were disposed of: Eight hundred dollars for the department of finance to pay expenses of a hearing on property valuations before the state board at Indianapolis, should such a hearing be deemed advisable. An ordinance to prevent the vending of old, second hand, unsanitary clothing on the streets was passed on suspension of rules. Nine hundred and thirty-four dollars was appropriated to pay Frank X. Gavit for legal services In the case of the city against the East Chicago and Indiana Harbor "Water company before the public service commission. Certain dry territory on Block avenue, Indiana Harborras admitted to the wet district. John H. Ross, as member of the school board, was elected to eucceed himself.
