Hammond, which is attracting much altenticn. It is gotten up in a striding style with the cover in red, white and blue. It was written by Mrs. Cooper for the Rooster Club's benefit bazaar and was later presented by thj? Kolah Camp Fire Girls at the
program given by the Hammond Woman's club at a Chamber of Commerce luncheon and also at the Flag Day exercises of the Hammond lodge of Elks at the Orpheum theater. Mrs. Cooptir is prominent in Hammond club and musical circles and everywhere her song is meeting with favor. A large and very interested company of Kvomen attended the demonstration yesterday at the Hammond Country club given by Miss Grace Smith assisted by Miss Helen Holden. Her subject was the cold pack method of canning and she demonstrated with spinach, asparagus, peas and strawberries. As a patriotic movement and one of immense importance to the government Miss Smith urged the women to preserve and call all fruits and vegetables for their home use. Interesting booklets on canning were distributed in the audience. A called meeting by the president of the Hammond Woman's club of the officers and members of the executive board was held at the Chamber of Commerce rooms Thursday, June 20th. Cards were the entertainment yesterday afternoon at the meeting of Circle Xo. 1 at the home of Mrs George Eder in South Hohman street. There were guests for four tables, the honors going to Mrs. King, Mrs. G. Raymus and Mrs. Jacob Schloer. redro was played and at the conclusion of the games a two course luncheon was served. Mrs. L. Ward of State Line street was named as the next hostess. The story hour at the Hammond public library will be held at the usual hour from ten to eleven cj'clock Saturday morning and all children are invited. Miss Richards will tell Penrod stories, also the storyof "The King or the Golden River." Mrs. Frank K. Hosier entertained at a thimble party yesterday afternoon at her home in Harrison street as a farewell to Mrs. Edward W. Bichler who will leave next week for her new home in Moline, 111. Tha appointments were in white and pink and during the afternoon a dainty collation was served. The members of the Golden Rod Crochet club were entertained by Mrs. Otto Duelke at a thimble party yesterday afternoon at her home in Summer street. Mr. Klotz has been superintendent of tne Sunday school and both he and Mrs. Klotz have ben prominently identified with the churcn in Hammond, and will be greatly missed. A post-nuptial party was given by several Whiting friends of Mrs. Charles Van Gilder yesterday afternoon at her home in Harrison street. A picnic luncheon was served and the guests devoted the remainder of the afternoon to their needle work. Music was also a delightful feature of the afternoon. The party was given as a. surprise to Mrs. Van Gilder and she was presented with a beautiful madeira luncheon set. The guests included Mrs. Gladden, Mrs. Patten. Mrs. Herthel, Mrs. Sallathe, Mrs. Gill, Mrs. Hoffman. Mrs. Campbell, Mrs. Evans. Mrs. Curtis. Mrs. Twitt. Mrs. Walker and Miss Eliza Gardner of Whiting, Mrs. E. M. Wilcox, Miss Aurilla Wilcox and Mrs. Van Gilder's mother, Mrs. William Wolter of Hammond. A delightful meeting of the D. A. M. club took place last evening at the home of Miss Lucile Minas in Rlmbach avenue. The guests brought their needle work and during the evening they were entertained with music. A prettily appointed luncheon was served the guests. In two weeks the club girls will form a party and go to White City and their next regular club party will be given by Miss Rose Lee Xagle at her home in South Hohman street.

The West Hammond publi cschools closed for the year today and the eighth grade commencement exercises are to be held this evening. This afternoon the grade school children held a picnic on the lawn of the Douglas school. Seventy-five of the pupils have Joined the garden club fostered by the county superintendent. Xot only will they make garden but poultry raising, canning, corn raising and other projects are to be entered upon. Orviile T. Bright is the director and Superintendent A. C. Deaver of the West Hammond schools will have supervision of the gardens. If the garden nets $5 the pupil is awarded an achievement pin.
