YOU MUST GIVE ALL YOU CAN. You cannot get away from your duty. Lest no specter of a pallid, wounded American boy lying uncared for in a trench haunt your vision at some future day, this week you should give and give all you can afford to the Red Cross, which will be the only one to succor that boy. Sixteen hundred jears ago an enemy host threatened Gaul; precursor of modern France. The first Constantine, surnamed the Great, led his armies to the defense. Three times he was victorious, and it was in this campaign, as Eusebius and other historians record, that he saw in the sky a luminous cross, with the Greek words which have been rendered into English: "In This Sign, Conquer " After sixteen hundred years there blazes in the heavens a cros as luminous as that which struck awe to the heart of Constantine ,a cross fiery, flaming and red, red with the blood of millions who have died for freeodm, red with the glow of the inferno wherein the liberty of the liberty of the world is being forged. The Red Cross must be the symbol in which America goes forth to conquer. All other forms of conquest we have renounced. Ours is the task not merely to supply millions of men and mountains of foodstuffs, ships and the weapons of warfare; we must rebuild cities and hearten war worn peoples, pour oil on their wound3 and bind them up, kneel by the dying and receive from their lips the simple testament of the faith in which we "are to rise, fight forward and finally rest on our arms victorious.

The tardiness of our entry into the war must be the measure of our

eftor!. " ' Let us give our money without stint. The Red Cross has appealed to Amercia; for $100,000,000. There ought

not to be an American who will not give something. It must be all you

can afford to give. To give money is so little! Can you shut your eyes upon the shining Red Cros3 this great week in our history?

TO SHOW THE ENEMY. LONDON, June 14- For pure fiendishness of purpose and in the ghastly toll of innocent women, children and old men, Germany's air raid on London of yesterday was the most murderous of all the aerial piracy which England ha3 seenNew destructive and pain making missiles were dropped by the invaders. Many of these injured suffered terribly from acid fluids contained in the bombs. Tiny children and women were in hospital feeds today with great burns caused by these murderous missiles.

With all sense of humanity and fear of God driven out of Germany

tthe preceding paragraphs alone are sufficient reason why you should sub

scribe to the national Red Cross $100,000,000 fund. If a nation goes mad and inflicts it3 cruelty upon the world at least there are ameliorating

remedies, and above the course of a wicked emperor and his criminal sol

diers the Red Cross, for humanity, offers a ray of light in a world that

is almost dark. Help the Red Cross. THE TREASON OF UNCONTROLLED PRICES.

The government of the United States stands in grave danger today of

being guilty of misprision of treason against the people of the United States.

The government must have supplies of a thousand kinds for the prosecution of the war. It must have them quickly. It must have them abundant

ly. It must pay for them with the proceeds of bonds sold to the American people and it must meet interest and principal on those bond3 by imposing taxes. What prices is the government as"ked to pay for supplies today in comparison with the prices of normal times? The figures tell their own story: In 1913 coal could be purchased at the motrth of the mine at an average of $1 a ton- Today it is held for a minimum of $4 a tonIn 1913 steel billets were quoted at $19 a ton. Today from $80 to $90 a ton is demanded. . in 1913 wire rods were $25 a ton at Pittsburgh. Today they are $100 a ton. In 1915 wire was $1-33 a hundred. Today it is $3.43. In 1915 structural steel shares at Philadelphia were offered at $1.10 a hundred: today they are listed at $1 40. Every cne of these items, vital to the war. has increased 400 per cent in less than four years, with the single exception of wire. That has increased 256 per cent in two years' time. And the season of the great rise in prices is the season of the nation's greatest danger. Two remedies are at hand- The one is to demand in taxes on those industries the excess prof; ts allowed them. The other is rigidly to exercise

Dasha at bat and de Graf catching. Baseball is coming to be the chief pcrt at Wellesley and almost every girl who has the time is trying for the team. If baseball becomes as great a hit at other p-irls' colleges as it is at Wellesley, baseball games between the schools will not be unusual affairs. Miss Jane do Graf ia tha school's best catcher and she doesn't "throw like a girl" when she pegs to second. And Esther Dasha is a hard hitter who can slam the ball on the nose.

WHAT you OUGHT to say is: THIS is my war. how can I help? AXD it shouldn't take you very long to find the answer. WHAT would you think if a Lake county soldier boy was wounded AND the Red Cross for lack of funds was unable to take care of him AND well, wouldn't you blush for shame if you hadn't contributed? U. SO, we said it was a balloon descending not a baboon. Don't get excited. SEE a lot of problems on the women's page in canning: HAVE they canned all the slackers yet? i IF you stuck a knife into a skulker you'd draw water not blood AXD dish water at that. THE Chesterton Tribune says "don't cut the alfalfa too soon"

WE consider this as a knasty knockl

on our poor barbers AXD besides alfalfa on any man's face Is the play ground for' a lot of BACTERIA.

THE joyous Gary Post speaks of jew-gaws and gim-cracks

PROBABLY means gew-jaws and jim-cracks. THE weather may be rotten for golf this spring BUT it's all right for the Red Cross ARE you contributing? ANOTHER thing girls, even if your FACE is your fortune DON'T try to circulate It all over town. A HEADLINE in a newspaper, "Removing a Wart" SUGGESTS a lot of things to us if we WANTED to get personal A SLACKER is sometimes a slicker as well. JANE ADDAJIS, Chicago's feminine freak, IS still talking pacifism DAVE JORDAN, Em Goldman and Jane Ad Jams are a fine set to draw to. IT'S pretty hard to love your enemies when they do all their trading with your friends.

the power given the president to commandeer these industries and use them for government work at prices, fixed by the government. If taxes are made heavier and prices are not controlled the trusts will pay the added taxe3 from still higher prices.. If the plants are commandeered the private purchaser may not be able to have his order filled, but the government can get value received and that means the government will get

seven billions' worth of munitions, instead of less than two billions, for

the seven billion dollars it borrows. Contracts are being let daily by the government Those contracts, once

sealed, will be binding, even against any future executive order to com

mandeer the plants. Unless the government acts immediately to stop thi

robbery of the nation it will destroy the democracy it has pledged itself

to maintain. Richmond (Va-) News-Leader.

! SPEED THE DAY.

The railways are advertising excursions to Yellowstone, Glacier and

other national parks.

It may be but a few years until the advertisements concern the National Dunes park of Indiana- Since we have gone ia for national playgrounds why have them all in the distant west? The bulk of the people can never get to see them. But if the government creates a reservation along the foot of Lake Michigan it will mean a playground for 20,0000,000 people in the lakes west and above all a handy breathing spot for 5,000,000 in the Chicago-Indiana-lower Michigan area.

Speak Clearly, When You Use the Telephone nPo recognize and understand spoken sounds, it is not necessary that they .should be loud. The faintest speech is readily understood if it is only clear. Clearness of tone, therefore, plays a most important part in successful telephone usage. , It will follow if, with the lips directly in front of and nearly touching the transmitter, each word is spoken distinctly, in a quiet, moderate tone.

GOODNESS! Wouldn't the bridegrooms be nervous if the June brides were aa late as the June roses?

WAR department requests wives not to follow soldiers to France. Is this with the idea of encouraging recruiting?

KAISER says he'll assist Greece with the mailed fist- Will be unwelcome. Greece has been harried too much by German female fists. This means Sophia, if you want us to speak plainer.
