TTMES' BUREAU AT STATE CAPITAL. INDIANAPOLIS. Ind.. June 18. According to figures just received here from Washington, Indiana now has approximately 19. 4S3 men in the fighting forces of the United States or subject

to call to federal service. These figures ar apportioned as follows: Regular army. April 1 to June 12, 6.537; Navy. April 1 to June 1. 1,ZS: Marine Corps. April 1 to June 7, 55; Xational Guard in Federal service June 10. 1.035; Xational Guard not in Federal service June 10. 4.177; regular army, estimated, prior to April 1, 3.000; Navy, estimated prior to April 1. l.Sflfl; Marine Corps, estimated prior to April 1. 600; men in officers' training camp (estimated). 900. Total, 19.4S5. To this number will be added on September 1 approximately 12.273 men. the new national army contingent from Indiana, this estimate of Indiana's Quota being based on the proportion of one man from each twenty registered. This will make a total of 32.20S Indtanans in the Federal service, not counting the men who enlist between row and September 1 in these various branches. ' It is probable that Indiana's contribution to the fighting forces of the nation will be about 40.000 by September 1. with more and more men to come all the time. If the war lasts two years, Indiana will have something like 75.000 or 0.000 men in the Federal service or approximately one of every four men who registered on June 5. The Indiana Xational Guard, the latest figures show, is still not up to war strength. The regiment now in the Federal service lacks about 967 men of full war strength, and the other Indiana National Guard units which have been recognized by the goevrnment are short about 1,200 men of full war strength. Every effort will be made by the Indi ana National Guard authorities to re cruit these organizations up to war strength by the time they go into Federal service on August 5. if the instructions of the militia bureau are followed. This will mean that 2.167 men will have to be obtained to fill up existing units in addition to a large number of men for units which are now seeking recog nition from the Federal government. Indiana s showing for the marine corps, according to the meager records for the department. Is a poor one, be cause of the fact that there are only two first-class marine corps recruiting stations in the sate. A large number of Indiana men probably have gone to cities outside the state to enlist In the marine corps. In regular army enlistments, Indiana has made an excellent showing, and much comment is heard on the fact that It is easier to get recruits of all kinds in Indiana than in some of the eastern states where a tremendous war spirit was said to be abroad before the war. It has been announced that beginning next- fall compulsory military training will be the rule at Indiana university, and all male students, will be required to take it. This is the first time the university has made this requirement, and the question of whether credit will be given for military training as a part of the course of study has not yet been determined.
