BLAMED

BY WELSH By K. C. HAMILTON (United Press Staff Correspondent.) NEW TORK. June 15. The terrific beating dolled out to Freddie Welsh when he met Johnny Kilbsne in Xew York probably is as much, responsible as anything for the fact that Benny Leonard is now lightweight champion of the world. Jimmy Dunn believes it. Kilbane is certain of it, and more tnun one follower of the fistic game in inclined to believe there is something in it. It is undeniably true that Welsh received a thorough pasting from Kiloane, and it is also an unchallenged fact that Welsh was faster in his blocking and had more speed when he started with Kilbane than when he met the. New York lightwe'g-ht. Kilbane hit Welsh everywhere except right on the spot that Welsh always had kept covered until he met Leonard. If Kilbane had been given the same opportunity for victory that presented Itself to Leonard he probably .would be wearing a crown on each angle of his curled locks. "The only thing I am sorry for," Kilbane declared after he had seen Champion Welsh uncrowned, "is that I wasn't In there instead of Leonard. I don't want to take any credit from Leonard. He's a grand little scrapper. But I certainly believe I would have finished Welsh that nigiit quicker than he did. I started Welsh to oblivion and Leonard, finished the trick." Dunn declared Kilbane a much better workman in the ring than Leonard. "Kilbane is a one-punch knockerout." be declared, "and Leonard is not. If Kilbane had been in the ring with Welsh the night he lost the championship instead of Leonard, you wouldn't be hearing any arguments as to whether or not the referee erred in not counting over Welsh. Mr. Welsh would have been on the floor and he would have been carried to his corner if Johnny had landed on his head. Believe me, that's right. If you don't believe Kilbane hits that hard you might ask George Chaney." The argument over which of these champions is the more sudden finisher and whether one is really so much better than the other probably will soon be settled, for arrangements are being made to bring them together. The match probably will be pulled off July 4, either in Ohio or New Tork. Do you care enough for our brave soldier boys to help the Red Cross? y

In a clever exhibition of fighting Jack Britton. the welterweight champion, and Ted Lewis, the Australian fighter, boxed ten rounds to a draw last night. So fast did the men box that their punches were bloeiced more than half of the, time. For the first four rounds Britton played for the body and thus compelled the Australian to lower his guard. At intervals during the bout both boys slugged, but their cleverness prevented any damage being done. It was their sev enteenth fight. They have boxed, some thing like ISO rounds. PASS RACE TEST

ST Eighteen cars qualified at Speedway Park yesterday for tomorrow's 250-mile race and not one was under a rate of speed of 100 miles an hour. De Palma led the field in the matter of speed, turning a lap in 1:05 .2-5. equaling 110 miles an hour, while Boyer in a Frontenac was only a little slower, showing 108 miles an hour. Averaging the time of the eighteen who made trials yesterday. It shows about 104 miles an hour, so that with this number showing this speed good time is looked for. Barney Oldfield's egg-shaped special ranked third in the qualifying trials. Something of a sensation was caused by liuzane, whose car Bkidded on the north turn, due to a loose wheel, and cavorted and twisted and cut circles four or five times before being brought to a standstill. DOLAN AND MOORE IN FIGHTS MONDAY CHICAGO. June 15. Tommy Walsh will leave tonight for Memphis and New Orleans. Walsh has Red Dolan boxing Jack Russo fifteen rounds in the Cresent City on Monday night, with a good July 4 date in sight if he wins. Pal Wilson Moore will make hia first start , since breaking his arm in Cleveland some time ago, meeting Kid Wolfe in Memphis for eight- rounds Monday night. Nate Lewis will "go to Memphis and handle Moore while Walsh is in New Orleans. If Moore wins he will meet either Pete Herman or Frankie Burns there July 4. TWO-FOOT FALL MAY END LIFE OF AVIATOR BENOIST SANDUSKT. O., June 15. A two-foot fall may cause the death of Tom Benoiet of St. Louis, an aviator. He was probably fatally injured here yesterday afternoon when he was knocked from the running board of a Soldiers' Home car and fell only two feet. He has been training aviators for the army.
