The eyes of the detective world aj-e centered on the village of Schererville. Only through the Intervention of medical science are the terrible consequences of a new and horrible crime being defeated. Meanwhile the constabulary is baffled by the mystery of the poison bug.The lS-months old baby of John H. Thiel of this city has just passed through the shadow of death and attending physicians are hopeful that the baby's life will be spired. Baby Thiel was bitten by a little bug of a species known to be harmless. But the bite developed an insidious poison at once and only the prompt response of a physician to a hurrycall saved the child from Immediate death. That the bug whicn is of the Olimex insect family was stood in a virulent poison and made a death-carrying messenger is the astonishing theory upon which the investigation is con ducted. The baby, however, was not the intended victim, nor were any of the other members of the family. Where millions are starring. American charity is the sole dependence of millions of people living in the lands which have a special interest in the locale cf early Christian and pre-Christian events. While relief distribution has become difficult in the dotted portion of the accompanying- map, even such war as the German and the Turk carry on cannot entirely keep relief out. Hundreds of thousands are refugees from the dotted into the striped areas shown upon the map. These are under control of the allies, who are facilitating the work.

plot and the probable Identities of the criminals. That Schererville. a tranquil and law-abiding hamlet, has been the scene of an international piot is considered possible by the presence here of men believed to be detectives of national repute.' Hired Man Intended Vlettm., A reporter gained an interview with a local authority working on the case. "In explaining the theory updn which the Investigation Is being prosecuted." stated the informant, " I will say, for instance, that a hired man was the Intended victim of the poisoned bug plotters. Supposing the hired man happened to be in possession of secrets which the criminals knew to be dangerous to their safety. After capturing the bug and forcing it to walk through a saucer containing the dealy poison they have taken the bug to the hired man's room in the barn and placed It under the covers In his cot while he slept. "Of course, you know that hired men are not September Morns. - It was hot this" night ' and sleeping as the hired man did fn his underwear with socks and perhaps his shoes on. the bug grew disgusted with him and crawlel out from under the covers. It wandered about In the yard until the night grow cooler and It sought shelter. Finally It arrived at the house where the baby slept. Crawling In an open window It came to tiie cradle of the slumbering child. It nestled on the towsled head and bit the rosy cheek. The child" stirred. It fled. The deed had been committed and an innocent victim's life was all but taken." Note Movie rights for "The Poisoned Bug Mystery" are for sale. Something of the immense amount ot work involved in the compilation of registration records has been evident at the East Chicago city hall ever since the beginning of registration a week ago. The transcribing of copies of names and addresses In lists for the use of the publtc. the making of summarirations in triplicate, duplicating all card records, etc.. has mode an immense amount of clerical work necessary. The registration board has been almost constantly on the job but noT one of the regular board has put in more time or more anxious moments than has T. F. Helms who has taken charge very Torgely of directing those that have been at work in the mayor's office.. In the police station, hanging where it is accessible to the public day and night, is a complete roll of the names of those who hold registration carda. A duplicate of this list has been prepared for the press and is available for any newspaper office that will publish It. It is understood, however, that such i publication is not advertising matter and will not be paid for. While the work has been heavy, a loed has. been taken from the shoulders of the few by the readiness with which pupils of the public schools have responded to the call for help. Principal H. H. Clark of the high school and teachers in commercial work have made it possible feu" many of the. students to give extra time to the-board of registration for this work. This morning at the city hall there were eighteen young people hard at work wherever , desk space could be found. ' Some were in the mayor's office, some m the engineer's office and some in the city clerk's office. It is hoped that the rogistrition cards may be all copied today and the work prac tically finished. ;rrf n ; f,A". Sdtomkif
