WAKE UP, YOU! Must there be bereaved mothers and wives in every community, growing death lists in the papers, crippled soldiers back from the trenches, and this country anarmed camp and arsenal, before the American people are aroused to the seriousness of the world crisis in which they will be the deciding factor? Are wo so accustomed to being spectators that we think this great conflagration is a big spectacle staged by a Griffith for us to watch? Have the cabarets and baseball, golf and automobiles, and the luxuries and ease of American life the greater freedom which we enjoy lulled us into the mistaken security of Belshazzar, who put off the guards who warned him of the peril? Or are we Neroes, fiddling while Rome burns? Thank Heaven, the President a patient man aroused to righteous wrath has long realized the graveness of the situation and applied, the lash to the backs of a dilly-dallying congress. True, we have conscription won after a long fight and Frshing is in France. But more ships are being sunk per month than can possibly be replaced in the same interval cf time; tons upon tons of food are being snatched from the mouths of the civil populations of the allied nations by the submarine; Russia has cc-ased to fight and it Is admitted the allies can not win without our immediate assistance. We, as a -people, must sacrifice. The national mind must be one purposeful, determined and alert. America is face to face with its gravest moment. The people must be made to realize what is before them not just some of the people but all of the people. The cold facts about the war situation are such as to test the morale of this nation. The people of th great republic, once thoroughly aroused, will make every sacrifice to win the war- With its vast resources, untold wealth, Iron will, patriotic fervor, Inventive genius, industrial fupremacy, and great energies back of its brave fighting men America will be invincible. "

IDA IS TO BE HIRED. When George Creel, the sensational (muck-raker was rewarded for lis campaign work of last year by being appointed as editor of the "Official Bulletin," the absurd "newspaper" issued by the government, ther were those who asserted with considerable heat that a vicious policy had been adopted in creating an absolutely useless position to pay a political worker. Nor has the record of this alleged newspaper caused these critics to recant- The position is a bit of grass extravagance and mereiy minister to the financial needs and inordinate vanity of a very yellow journalist This is bad enough in itself but it appears that the wost is yet to come. The Bulletij announces that Ida M. Tarbell has been engaged to write a series of articles on "army cantonments" and it is inferred that she wilt be paid for these articles a fancy figure by the United States government, in this manner being reimbursed for the work she did for the keep-us-out-of-war ticket during the last campaign- This unique method of canceling partisan obligations at public expense impresses us powerfully withthe wisdom of that inspired savant who once observed, as he drew down his busy eyebrows and placed the finger tips of his right hand against those of his left, that there are more ways than one to skin a cat. Fort Wayne News.

HOW MUCH IS LIBERTY. WORTH TO YOU? This is a question that every American should ask himself or herself. For generations we have boasted of our love of liberty. We have called our country "the land of the free and the home of the brave." It has been proved in other wars that this was not a mere empty boast by our fathers and forefathers. But the question of how much is liberty worth to this generation has not yet been fully answeredIt is going to be answered nobly by those who serve under the colors. Many of them will answer with their death. It is going to be answered and answered clearly by- others who serve their country as best they may. It is going to be answered by others still who, unable to render personal service, have yet furnished their government the means to prosecute the war. . The number of subscribers to the Liberty Loan bonds is going to be an index of the love of liberty of the American citizenry of today. The list of Liberty Loan bond holders is going to be a directory of the patriots of America. , '

evening and the place was entirely cleaned out of all its vegetables. We. had been expecting this. But the arrest, conviction and-infliction of drastic punishment upon any one found looting gardens will soon rut a stop to th.e practice. - If persons are patriotic enough to till a garden they should be protected from such vermin. For quick justice" it may be pointed out that cny courts can give a penal farm sentence of six months and impose a heavy enough fine, $500. which if not paid will Insure the removal from the rest of society of the offender for at least two years. New York City magistrates have already announced they will deal sternly with the ravagers of back yard gardens.

CLEANLINESS. The Bible says it is next to godliness, and it is, for & fact. Clean men, clean talk, clean food, clean books, clean pictures, dean plays, clean sidewalks, clean streets clean homes, clean back yards, clean citizenship, clean habits, clean laws, clean contracts, clean consumers, clean muic! clean dances, clean newspapers, clean baseball everything clean, no dirt anywhere to soil the beauty and joy of living, says the Ohio State Journal. Being clean is not a (sentiment; it is a great and adorable fact, and fa necessary to high aspiration and courageous duty. A man cannot live in dirtand do great things. Says Mrs. Atherton: "Raga, tatters and dirt are always in the mind before being on the body." So the practical thing to do is to keep he mind clean.

DISPATCH from West Virginia tells of man who is 120 years old. Such stories don't interest any more unless they are complete. . What we want to know is whether this youth chews, drinks, "walks the dog" or motorcycles with a nifty wren on the rear seat.

AWFULLY hard to imagine a young man, who doesn't give up his seat to a lady in a crowded street car or who shoves women and children out of the way to get on the car first, is going to be brave when he is conscripted to the firing line.

Sliss Gretchen Clay wearing her new costume. Miss Gretchen Clay, whose name is said to be enprraved on the social register of Philadelphia, is happy because she has some new wearing apparel which is "different." In the picture she is shown taking her morning walk at Palm Beach, clad in a sweater and muffler of wool cleverly woven into strange designs. White collar and cutTs and a black belt add the conventional touch.

Well-Known Inhabitants Speak of Old Reliable Herbal Remedy

Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery, the herbal remedy which has had such a fine reputation for 50 years, is endorsed by many well-known residents of Indiana. Every day mora and more people are coming to realize that this is a standard medicine, and is safe to take. It contains no alcohol or narcotics. The Ingredients are printed on the package. It is to be had at every drug store in the land in either liquid or tablet form. If not obtainable at your dealers, send $1.00 to Dr. Pierce, Invalids' Hotel, Buffalo, N. V., and he will mail large package of tablets. Mrs. Eliza Teeter, who resides at 610 N. Main St.. Goshen, Ind- says: "It is now about fifteen years since I had a wonderful demonstration with Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery. I was down and out with what my doctor pronounced tuberculosis. I had coughed night and day for a whole year and had lost so much flesh I began to look like a walking skeleton. Two of my sisters had died with tuberculosis and I felt certain that my time had tome, too. After tha doctor gave me up, a friend recommended Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery to my husband and we wrote for advice to Dr. Tierce's Invalids' Hotel In Buffalo, X. y. The 'Golden Medical Discovery' gave me new strength end vitality right from the start, and in a year's time I was just as strong and hardy as ever. I have never suffered with a deep hack

ing cough since and it is all of fifteen years since I was at death's door with this ailment I have always felt very grateful for the advice given me, as I

MRS. ELIZA TEETER. know I would not bo alive today had I not taken tha 'Discovery'." Mrs. M. Johnson of 201 E. Ohio St., South Bend, Ind., says: "Just at the close of winter my husband had pneumonia. He did not get entirely over It his bronchial tubes were affected and his lungs were in bad condition. He had a very bad cough and became weak and pale. He had the doctor but he did not help him. He was growing worse ail the time and began to think there was no help for him. A neighbor advised him to take Dr. Tierce's Golden Medical Discovery, which he did, and five bottles completely cured him of his cough and built him up in a strong, healthy condition. I also have taken the 'Golden Medical Discovery as a spring tonic and blood purifier and found it to be an excellent medicine."Adv.
