Governor notifies Mayor He Can Name Two Boards as City is Big Enough.
Claims Exemption; Says He's Nervous Pf 62 males, residing out of town, who went through the process of absentee registration before Conscription Secretary A. L. Brown of Gary, fully one-half claimed exemption. Only those having a father, mother, wife or child under 11 solely dependent upon ' them for support can be entered. Physical disability will have to be determined later. One man who was registered claimed exemption because he is nervous.
Although notified by Gov. Goodrich that the city of Gary is entitled to two boards, one for each 30,000 population. Mayor Johnson has decided that the present board can handle the situation. As a result Commissioners Brennan, Brown and Toner assisted by sixty-two precinct registrars and a large staff of volunteers will direct military registration work In Gary on June 5. All five precinct registration places have been secured. A few changes have been made in ths personnel of registrars in order to insure efficiency. In the meantime the work of getting word to foreigners that thay must register is being carried on.

Connelly of 144th and Baring avenue left yesterday for Rochester, Minn., where she will have an operation performed by the Doctors Mayo.

F. C. Nason of Hammond, and Frank B. N'ason of East Springfield. Pa., and one sister, Mrs. O. D. VanCamr. of Girard. Pa. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon aV 4 o'clock from the residence and will be private. Interment

E. C. Todd, 69 years old. died at the home of his s.ster. Mrs. C. I Wolff, 754 Claude street, last night from chronic nephritis. Besides Mrs. Wolff he leaves two other sisters, Mrs. H. J. Toeilnes of Hammond, and Mrs. C. L. Beck of Chicago. The funeral will be held tonight and the body shipped to Nappanee, Ind.. for burial tomorrow.

Word was received by Mrs. Viola Smiley, Oonkey avenue, that a cousin, Walter Shakes, who is well known here was kl lied In an auto-train collision a few nights ago at Bourbon. Ind. Mr. Shakes had enlisted in the army and was spending a last night with his friends. In racing withanother machine they crashed into a Pennsylvania train, killing himself and two others. He has visited many times in Hammond.
