Happenings of a Day In Lake County's Lively Capital
"SILVER THREADS"
The city council met last evening. the purpopo being: to recei? bid.s on th.e building of concrete crossings for the city. Frank E. MuzzaU ws the successful bidder, his price beinff 9 cnts rer square yard for 4-inch -walks and $1.3 per square yard for 6-inch. Joli Schwircho was the other bidder. Changes -wero mails in the specifications for a deep welL recently adopted by the council and the council will readvertise for bids for the work as soon as the nT specifications are prepared and 'approved. Members of the Chamber of Commerce were present petitioning' the council for an appropriation to provide a city play ground for the children on the South Ward school grounds. The matter was referred to the committee on public welfare and it Is -expected that a favorable-report win be given, as the playgrounds movement has the endorsement of the Parent-Teachers Association. The council also passed an ordinance without a dissenting vote, the storage, sale, giving- away, discharge or firing of fireworks or other pyrotechnic displays. The ordinance is drastic in its provisions and practically ends the kids' old-time Fourth of July celebration.
The governor and the state fire marshals have requested that such ordinances should be passed throughout the stg.te as a matter of safety in war time and also to conserve the powder and other necessary ingerdients in the make-up of th tire works. Crown Point's soldier boys at th front are not beinff forgotten by Crown Point citizens, yesterday a big package of necessities and luxuries being forwarded them by their friends. That is about the least that the "stay at homes" can do, and it shouid be made a regular practice from this time on. The sad death of Miss Pauline Knopf, the nineteen year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. "Will Knopf, living east of this
city was reported yesterday, he dying suddenly on Sunday afternoon at her parents home. The funeral service will be held this afternoon at the St. Paul's Lutheran church, the burial to be at the Maplcvood cemetery. The big storm of Saturday night did considerable damage in Crown Toint. electric light and telephone wires being blown down and the service suffering accordingly. Much damage was also done to shade and fruit trees, many branches being blown down by the high wind.
