May 10 17 24 HAMMOND BOYS WIN HONORS Continued from Page One) certainly, living far different than we are. Mashed potatoes, brown gravy, butter, pie. etc. Well that certainly sounds like home sweet home to us fellows, as those luxuries are not furnished in this fort, and it Is our opinion we would not feel like soldiers if we were fed so well, but probably the boys at Andrews are on the officers' reserve, and if so they may bf furnished with dress uniforms of serge to attend drill practice and sabers to buckle on when they pull off those various Jazz Land entertainments. Every single one of us are satisfied here, and not a complaint to offer. These last two weeks of hard drill on the field and on th"! big guns, with the raw wind cutting through our heavy uniforms, and this connected with the pork, beans, hash, etc.. has started us on the road to men and it takes a man to be a soldier. Pleasures? Ob, yes reading and l writing rooms, pianos, billiards, and all that is connected with a first clas-s gymnasium, the latter place is where we spend the greater rart of our evenings, and under the direction of a skilled Instructor, we are becoming the best of amateur wrestlers, boxers, bag punchers, and wall scalers, always pursuing ! that end. "getting hard." Neumann. Fhrommer. Voorhies and Walters, have been placed on the list as acting corporals and will assume that position in the near future. Brusel la acting as commanding officer's orderly, and Jones is assistant in the reading instructions, these men are of the fourth company. In the second company Hickman is an acting corporal. Beckman a corporal of the guard, and Stewart on the list for acting corporal. Arkin is one of the two selected for the radio division, and is making good. Krteger Is chief of the six men in his tent. Miller and Foley in the tower as range finders for the firing of the big guns, and McFarland and Hudson are using their quick hands and eyes in the signalling division. I am clerk of the second company and am seeing to it that our bunch is being given all attention in headquarters. I get to hear the officials praise the work of the Hammond fellows, and everything looks like we will all "get there." Well. Hammond, we are watching you closely. Watch us the same.
