The most famous relics of a de-, parted rac rrt all the Americas, the ' xnonaments of Qairigna, remnant of ' the ancient Mayan crvilization 1 most of which today is shrouded in! antiquity have been preserved from the assault of the jungle. Today the stupendous monoliths, canning-' Yy carved by the artisan of a lost, race, whose speech is thought to have borne many words akin to Japanese, : may be observed by any tourist in Guatemala without trouble for they arc within two miles of the United' Fruit Company's station at Quiri-; jjaa, the location of a magnificent concrete $250,000 hospital mailt by the company. A few years apo reports of the Royal Geographical Society stated that the magnificent ruins were completely hidden by the forest. In some cases giant trees had grown o?er them and the stones were cmuch crushed by the pressure of the roots that nothing remained worth observing. When the United Fruit Company

started to reclaim a vast area of jungle to grow bananas for the American markets and began to introduce sanitation into the tropics of Guatemala it was desided to preserve that section of jungle in which the mins are located and to have it cleared. This was done and an organized study of the ruins was made possible under the guidance of Professor Edgar L. Ilewett, Director of the School of American ArchaeJogy, by the financial assistance gWen by the United Fruit Company. Today the railroad run within twenty rods of the fringe of forest enclosing the great tropical park where the ruins are. Aside from the ruins of a great temple which is now thought to have stood soma time before 600 A. D. there are, in the grove, fifteen large carved monoliths in two groups. In one of the -roups the figures carved on the sur- ' .8 of the stone are all men. In the other they are women. The great stones are arranged irregularly around what was probably the most important part of the ancient
city. Six of the stones are tall standing fourteen to twenty feet abore the ground and measuring three to five feet square. The others are oblong or rounded, shaped to represent huge turtle or frogs. One of these stone ha& on its top huge grores -where it is supposed the body and lmrbe of a victim for sacrifice were placed, with smaller grove down which the blood might run. - Ura&lry on both back and front of the tall monoliths i carved a huge frsman figure standing fell faced and in a rigid conventional attitude. The Maya bud advanced far beyond the profile carving of the Egyptians. The sides are covered by cleverly wrought tables of hieroglyphs about 18 inches SQoare usually containing two or three grotestrne figures of men and animals. The largest of the stoae animals weighs about 20 tons but the Mayas had advanced so far in mechanics that they could transport stone block weighing from 20 to 80 tons. Also in their hieroglyphs or inscriptions they had begun t convey sounds rather than word.

lust Eat What We Can Get; Mot What We Want
The Tribune today tells of efforts to increase the food supply by the cultivation of gardens the coming season. With the nation at war, withdrawing from active production from half a million to a million men, the food supply may be more seriously affected than ever before in this country. Alrea.lv grocers are beginning to worry about obtaining supplies at any price. CJardens can do wonders in adding to the family supplies of vegetables, which must replace other articles of diet to a 'considerable extent. In the past, we have, eaten what we chose to eat, paying the price asked. The time is at hand when we must begin substituting other articles of food or go hungry. Why not be your own landlord, raise a garden, have a few chickens and keep a cow? The wise man today is the man who is investing his money in GARDEN LAND.
